Hopefully a simple question that will garner many a response. I have just purchased a Sans Digital 4 bay RAID tower. It will be running via an addonics eSata to USB converter directly into my airport extreme for now and eventually into either a soon to be arriving Mac Mini (still via usb) or self-built linux box (via eSata) and serving as my media server setup. Haven't decided whether to set it up as JBOD or Spanning yet, mainly deciding at this point which drives to order. Been looking at the WD 1TB Caviar Models either Green Or Black, or the Samsung F1 RAID drives (4 of each). Any thoughts, insights, suggestions, recommendations, etc. would be much appreciated.
Considering your intended use, I'd tend to lean towards the coolest, quietest drives possible rather than going for performance. Towards that end, I'd recommend either WD's Caviar Green line or Seagate's Barracuda LP line of drives.

I agree...performance is not an issue for you, so no need to raid and risk data. Look for the cheapest price per GB, and more than likely that will lead you to green drives.
Samsung will probably the best price for GB but from my experience, WD are better quality and will last for longer. Pick WD Green although im samsung fan!
