Asus A8N-SLI Premium Help

OK I have an A8N SLI PREMUIM mothbaord I had an AMD 3700 in it.Well still do now.My problem is that i bought an AMD4600 x2 2.4 socket AMD2.It doesnt fit I thought this mobo cuz use athlon x2 is AMD 2 and Athlon x2 differnt?thanks

The reason socket 939 was discontinued was becasue it supported DDR memory, not the new DDR2. Socket 754 was already in place and also supported DDR. DDR2 was out and AMD released socket AM2 to support it and socket 939 was out. Socket 754 is still in production, but it is old technology by now.

Yeah, I have a bunch of 939 systems running with a load of spare parts. Forget spending any money on it. Build something new with the great prices right now. I bought 2 x 1 GB of PC26400 for like $14 or something. An E8400 is $149 at Microcenter. newegg has P45 MB's for a hundred bucks or so. Go for it.

Edit: I have both the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium and the A8N32-SLI Deluxe up and running for years. Use the systems all the time. I also have a MSI K8N Platinum 939 running currently as well as a fourth 939 sytem running with a Mach Speed MB and a 4000+ San diego 2.4 Ghz. Have four AMD socket 754's running too.

Not to confuse, The MB 'socket' is what is different. You have an ASUS A8N-SLI "socket 939" MB. You bought a dual core socket 'AM2' processor. The two are not compatible. But yeah, your 4600 x2 is an AM2 processor, so you would need an AM2 MB, not a socket 939. I am am not up on my current AMD MB's, I haven't built one in a while.

Here newegg has 130 AM2/AM2+ MB' listed. To be sure if the AM2 processor is supported you might want to go the the product's web page and check exactly what processors are supported and by which BIOS rev. Like I said, I'm not up to date on the AM2 processors and MBs.

After a closer look, it appears any MB with the AM2+ designation will support your AMD 4600 X2 AM2 processor.
