I have a 1 TB WD Black HDD that I used strictly for media storage. I often find myself going 2-4 weeks without doing any writing to the drive at all. So that makes me wonder, is it good for it to just sit there running the entire time or should I disconnect it (SATA) when I anticipate that I won't be using it for a while?

Like all components, they suffer from effects of heat and power cycling. Maintaining reasonable temps and not varying temps a lot from shut offs / shutdowns are best for long life. With HD's, as they age, shutting them off for any length of time can be a bad thing.

Right now, I have the drive connected and usually shut the machine down at night. Would you recommend that I just keep with this method?

Honestly, it should work fine as you are doing right now.
