Hi,

I am trying to put some ArcticSilver 5 thermal compound on the gpu but when removed the cooler I saw that it was all protected by a plastic paper that was between the cooler and the board, can that be removed?

Will the AS5 make a drop of 2-5degrees?

ThnX

Wasn't the xbox 360 using something similar? I never took mine apart to see, but I remember reading something about that.

You can see the plastic layer in this photo.

Very shiny.

I'd leave it on.

Maby be some kind of non conductive coating for protection.
I'm sure it doesn't help cool the HD4850.

Zalman needs to make a specific kit for the Hd4850 now.

Somebody.

From that picture it does not cover where the core makes contact. leave it be

That zalman stuff sure applies nice. Seems to get almost powdery after its been on for a while(re did my cpu heatsink that had that on it), but still works well.

I left the plastic layer and applied the AS5 on the GPU and it made a nice job. The results: 3-4º drop on idle and 7-9º drop in full load.
It did a better job on the gpu than the cpu lool Me who was afraid to put some cause I read that it is electricity conductive unlike the ceramic compound.

as long as you do not put too much(i mean you would have to dump the full tube)it will not get anywhere other then the gpu core anyway. glad you got a good decrease in temps.

I got similiar results with Zalman Super Thermal Grease.
