Hi, I was wondering if a 45nm cpu would work with my P5W DH Deluxe motherboard. I was thinking of getting this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] &Tpk=e7200. The reason I am asking this is because it says it can support 65nm technology but not 45nm on the Asus website. Any help would be great, thanks.
I would personally spend the extra ~40 and get the e8400, only like 160 with a 10 of coupon on newegg. If the board's website says that it only supports 65nm, i would assume that it will not support 45nm.
Well, it doesn't say it can't it just says nothing about it. It uses the same socket type as the 65nm processors but I'm still not sure. Ya, I looked at the e8400 but its FSB speed is too fast for my motherboard.
If it doesn't specifically say that is supports then i would not risk buying it and not having it work. Generally they list only what works, not what doesn't work.
Unless you can return it if it doesn't work, I would recommend that you buy a CPU that's officially supported on the P5W DH Deluxe. Also check the BIOS revision required to support a given CPU.
I used an E6300 with that board awhile ago. While its obviously 65nm chips work, like others said I would not risk using a 45nm unless you can find out if its offically supported. Look at the Q6600 if you are stuck in 65nm land.
**EDIT** A quick google search nets this page http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=515218 . It says it does infact support 45nm chips via BIOS update, and there is a link to an offical statement from ASUS saying so but its a dead link now. So it looks like youre good to go for 45nm, just make sure you flash to the newest BIOS before you put the chip in there.
