At my work, the IS / IT department recently released a briefing that changing the computer display settings can cause the computers to freeze. I've never heard of this and can only find references to problems like this involving drivers, games, etc. This statement is a blanket statement and meant in general (i.e. - computer is not used for anything other than internet browsing and MS Office applications). Below are the specs for the computers:
IBM Lenovo
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33 GHz
OnBoard Video - Intel Q35 Chipset, Intel 3100 GPU
Samsung SyncMaster 920n LCD Monitors
2 GB RAM
I was just wondering if anybody else has any input regarding the possibility that something like changing the display resolution, etc. could cause a computer to freeze in general use situations.
Most Likely they have user's causing issues by setting the system to invalid settings, and as a result are asking people to either not change them or locking them down so you can't change them easily and giving a general answer.
They may also want standard resolutions for many reasons and the reason given is simply yet another reason to try and make their stance go down easier.
------------------------------If its good in theory but not in practice,
its not good theory.

I thought it was something like that - generalizing the conditions for fear the user is incapable of understanding the technicalities. The only other thing I could think of is that if users are setting resolutions / refresh rates outside of the monitors’ capabilities and the system is not resetting after the 15-second time auto-reset.
Thanks for the input, any body else have any ideas??
