But NewEgg says it's "deactivated." I think this just happened sometime today because last night it was available. Has this board been discontinued? If so, what would be an equivalent board to get?
After reading the problems people post about on this forum, I'm wondering if I should stay away from Gigabyte. I've never bought a Gigabyte before.
I really like the board for its:
* 1600 FSB
* Two PCI Express x16
I just purchased an Intel Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9550.
Is there a reason why this mobo is "deactivated?" Should I go with another board? Or is this a good board to go with, and I should get it from someplace else other than newegg?
I'm buying this system as a gaming system to tide me over until Nehalem is released.
Intel took the X38 and did a die shrink with it so it requires less power and produces less heat which in turn makes it more stable to OC and energy efficient bla bla bla. Intel stopped manufacturing them and replaced them with the X48 chipsets. You can still find the X38 mobos from overstock but you might as well get the X48 if you don't have an X38 already. If you can find one for a lot cheaper though, I would go for it...I just wouldn't go out of my way looking for an X38 if you don't get a good discount on it.
From Gigabyte, they are actually identical boards, just the different chipsets. I got a GA-X38-DQ6 gigabyte board late in their production and the board was actually stamped GA-X48-DQ6. They kept the exact same design and just swapped the new chips when then came along.
Thumbs up for Gigabyte. I am pretty happy with mine.
What would be some really good RAM to get for this board? I'd like to buy the best RAM possible for this board (but only if it'll make a noticeable difference -- I don't mind paying a lot, but I don't want to pay for something that I won't notice because it's swamped by some other bottleneck).
Thank you guys! I'm totally psyched about your replies!

No die shrink. X48 is still 90nm. 65nm for x48 is from rumors that has since died down when x48 actually hit the market. Benchmarks have also shown no performance and power consumption differences outside of margin for error. They're the same.
Yeah in the mean time I just looked it up. After I got my X38 I didn't read through the X48 reviews when they came out.
I knew that board makers were PO over it and just slapped them into the same board designs. There was the thing that it was supposed to give you the 1600MHz FSB but they already had it supported with the X38 so it was a moot point that the X48 was even necessary.

They had to put those chips somewhere, and x48 is better off for manufacturers than x38, which most uninformed people believe is different and inferior than x48.
I was one of the last to buy the board before they discontinued it (if not the last). It was discontinued within 24 hours of purchase. I didn't compare prices before I bought it, but I thought I got an okay deal for what it offered. I paid $163 after shipping.
I am pleased to say that I am very satisfied with the board! My excitement is only compounded by the frustration I had with the MSI P45 Platinum (HC Edition) board I purchased prior to it. This thing is rock solid and the performance is more than sufficient for my needs. I can only imagine that the X48 board is equally as good. I think I will be a loyal Gigabyte customer from now on.
Also, I wish newegg would link over to the equivalent replacement for the items they discontinue. It would be helpful for those who were interested in it.
