4850's with better-than-reference coolers?

Only one on Newegg - seems strange with the fact this card runs HOT, that there would not be more of these available. My brother has a 4850 and I am absolutely mortified by how hot it runs.

Is this a good one:

***OR***

For $90 more, I could buy a 4870. For just one second, pretend the performance of the cards is THE SAME, and the only difference between them is noise and cooling. How much better is the 4870 (noise and cooling)? Does it run cooler than the 4850? Does it run quieter than the 4870? If it does, that would be worth the extra $80 to me, as I don't really need the performance (yet). Ideally, I would have a 4850 with the 4870 cooler.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Yeah, I am starting to reach that realization, and they should be cheaper when I am ready to buy (another month maybe).

Looks like the 4870 runs slightly cooler (but still very hot) - can the fan speeds be changed for this card like it can on the 4850?

i have no idea how bout that msi card so cant really comment.but i think cooling will be ok.but personally, i don like the build quality of msi.

- 4870 might make more noise than 4850 but the cooler is definately better as it takes the heat and lets it out outside of ur chase.
-4870 runs cooler than 4850 due to dual slot
-4870 might b a bit more noisy then 4850 but not sumthin very alarming and definately nothin compared to gtx 260 or 280.
- if u game less in less than 1600x1200, go with 4850. xtra 80 won be worth for the ammount of performance increase u would get. if u r worried bout temps, just increase the fan speed to just 40% and the temps go down from 80C to less than 50*C. if it still bugs u, u could always get a aftermarket cooler and fit it in the card. any cooler that fits into 3870 would be fine.if sum1 u no has a dead 3870, u could take the cooler from there too.

50C would not bother me at all - as long as its not super loud.

I am currently running @ 1280x1024, but will soon be at 1650x1050 or 1920x1200.

i got my gainward 4870 today , given the reports on temperatures i promptly did the fan tweak in catalyst , i found the best speed is 35% in my machine as mines pretty quiet , i get idle temp of 49'c now and 60'c - 65'c under load which is fine as far as im concerned :) , my 3D mark 06 hit 15k which im happy with. all in all a great card , kept my nipper happy too as he inherited my old 8800gt

just use the fanfix with the stock cooler?

my 4850 is at 650/1050 at 46 degrees idle and around 65 load.
the fan speed is at 60% and it's not too noisy.

the 4870 doesn't perform so much better that it's worth the ~$100, imo

Zalman needs to make an complete VGA cooler kit for the Hd4850 ASAP.

I like the MSI HD4850 with the huge VGA cooler set up. However I havn't seen any good deals on it.
