I've saved enough money for a new rig. This is going to be my first build so I need your help, guys.

This is what I'm going to buy

GPU - GeForce 280GTX
M/B - nForce 780i
H/D - 2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB
RAM - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB)
CPU - q9450
DVD - Asus DRW-2014L1T DVD
CPU cooler - XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle

I can't decide on a case and PSU

I'd like to buy a 1000w PSU and a full tower case.

Any help would be much appreciated!

How long until someone recommends you ditch the GTX280 for an ATI card. I bought the GTX280 myself so I don't mind. Also... get the retention bracket that is sold along with the HDT-S1283. It will help... alot!

Good luck!

What is your total budget?

Are you going for a RAID array? If not, I would recommend the Western Digital 640 GB hard drive - great performance and usually cheaper per gig.

You don't want to go crossfire for now? The 4850 or 4870 are supposedly a much better deal for very similar performance (if not better in a lot of way).

I have a 780i and love it, but right now, it seems that the best bang for the buck is going with the X38/X48 and crossfire (if you intend multiple GPUs) or P35/P45 if you want a single GPU.

I'd recommend the Coolermaster Stacker, have seen excellent reviews of the Xaser, and I personally love the Antec 900, but would love to have the Antec 1200 (improved and bigger 900).

GOod luck with the build.

I would forget RAID, Skip GTX for 4870x2, switch to intel chipset, and maybe get the WD 640 instead of the 500

No, I'm not an ATI fan. I will probably go SLi when the 280 GTX becomes cheaper.
Thanks for your replies, guys!

not an ATI fan? Hmmm I never based purchases off of fanboism but which product performed better... Perhaps I'm in the minority

I've heard some bad things about ATI. I don't really want to get into an argument over what brand is better. When it comes to performance/price ratio, ATI sure beats Nvidia, there's no doubt about that. However, as far as I know, Nvidia has better support and many games are made with Nvidia cards in mind. I might be wrong but still... Nvidia is my personal preference.

Has any of you guys bought the Antec 1200 ? Newegg doesn't have it yet. It's available on Amazon, however, I don't feel safe buying such expensive things of off Amazon. I'm not familiar with their returns policy.

That Corsair 1000 you linked is an excellent choice with plenty of power for a top end system with GTX 280 SLI. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.p [...] ry&reid=89

Thanks everyone for your replies!

That's what I just ordered from newegg

GPU - GeForce 280GTX
M/B - nForce 780i
H/D - 2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB
RAM - Corsair DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB)
CPU - q9450
DVD - Asus DRW-2014L1T DVD
CPU cooler - XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle
(with XIGMATEK ACK-I7751 Retention Bracket)
PSU - CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2

All I need now is a full tower case.
If I buy the Antec 1200, will I be able to fit everything in?

The Twelve Hundred is a huge case. It's actually big enough that it's going to make your hardware kinda seem puny.

Antec 1200 is in newegg and has been for a long time. Its not really what people thought it would be and it was below expectations of customers of Antec 900. I would go for the coolermaster stacker, cosmos s, thermaltake armor+, or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811112159 if you got money. there is a cheaper version http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811112160

Man you're going to be upset when the 4870X2 with 2GB of GDDR5 comes out later this year, that's estimated at 50-80% better than the GTX280 already. It will cost the same price or less than the GTX280. $550USD was the lastest figure I've seen so far.

Don't buy hardware off of "what you've heard" or without reading some articles. Buy what's the best performance/price ratio from statistical analysis, not brand loyalism.

My bad. NewEgg does have the Antec 1200.
Hopefully the parts don't come D.O.A.

Yes, I wll probably be upset when the 4870X2 hits the shelves but I can't wait any longer. I haven't upgraded for years. You can never keep up with technology's fast pace. I won't be surprised if Nvidia releases a better card few months later. I don't really need the best card on market since my monitor's native resolution is 1240x1020 and I'm not planning on getting a bigger one anytime soon. Don't ask me why I didn't buy a cheaper card instead of the GTX280=))

Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate your help!
Will be reporting back soon!
