I'm doing a clean install of windows vista home premium sp1 oem and when i get to the screen to select my hard drive i don't get an option to partition or format the drive. Help!
The easiest way would be to use a free utility then and partition it before, then install vista. I too find the setup lacking decent options, you could use a linux disk too or an xp disk to partition it.
Ah thank you that's what i need. Can anyone recommend a good one? Is Cute Partition Manager any good? I just want format the drive and have 2 partitions.
btw, when it shows you the harddisk, at that moment, you can click on advance options. and then you'll be able to format, partition, etc. (as far as i remember, i just installed vista today, lol)

Strange, when i installed it i was able to delete the existing xp partitions(XP and my old PVR one) and make a new vista partition. I also left a small partition for XP if its ever needed. i think it was advanced as well.
ok, here is another solution, but rather lengthy. take out your harddisk. put it in another pc as slave, do whatever you wanna do with it (using disk management). put it back into your pc. and there you go.

when your using an oem of vista on clean install you need to by-pass the key and un-check the activate over internet ,it will ask which version you have and it will then install. Only problem is you have to re-install vista a second time and then enter your key and activate over internet. Its because its not a retail version. Check internet the work-around is discussed in many places .

I believe your refferring to the upgrade retail version. You can do that to the upgrade retail version to get vista retail on the cheapo. An oem copy (assuming it's a copy you buy yourself and not taken from a prefab PC) will install normally.
OEM copies do not come with microsoft support vs. retail copies which accounts for the price difference i believe.
Had a similar problem trying to format and partition a 'brand new' previously unpartitioned WD HD. Vista 64 setup refused to partition and format the new drive. Used XP disk to format the new drive. Popped in the VISTA 64 OEM disk and formatted and loaded OS no problem.
In reference to installing vista w/o key and then re-installing with a key. Yes that was/is the workaround for installing an upgrade version of Vista without having a previous version installed. With XP upgrade, it would ask for the CD if it didn't find a previous version installed, Vista upgrade required that the qualifing Operation system to be On the HDD - Been there, done that.
Added - This was a free upgrade to the XP Pro that I bought. Put the XP on one drive - didn't want the software dual boot, so installed vista on 2nd Drive (With 1st drive disconnected)

Uh...peeps? Can't you just delete the existing partition, create a partition, create another, then install on whichever partition you choose using the Vista setup wizard?
