First build, hey all I was wondering about a new build for some decent gaming and maybe some video editing. I dont need to overpower everything or need a fancy looking rig (basic! no lights needed). I was just looking for some help on tower, motherboard, and ram and CPU. some help would be awsome. Oh btw I am new here my name is DED (DarkEvilDead).
Well, with video editing in your plans, a Q6600 might be nice. Let's see...
Oh, and welcome to the forums.

This will cost about 1400 to build. (add cooler, HDD and DVD-ROM). I'm sure you can get some help trimming a bit of fat from it to meet your budget.
(about my mobo choice)
PCI express 16 slot are compatible with any smaller size pci express slot. This means you can add a video capture device to the other pci-e 16 slot. While this will reduce the speed of the other pci-e slot to 8x it shouldn't bottleneck a single gpu.
(about the case)
The case is big easy to work in and largely tooless. I'm sure others will have other suggestions
(about the ram)
You really don't need better then ddr2 800. but this came with the ram fan. I can tell you that my memory does get HOT.

1400 is over his budget. I'll have a build posted shortly that isn't. I'm assuming that budget doesn't need to include a monitor.

Ok, here is a build that doesn't break the budget, and even has slack in it. Some of it is straightforward, but I've commented on a couple of perhaps unexpected choices.

Model #:BX80562Q6600
Item #:N82E16819115017
$209.99 $209.99
For the sake of the video editing, I figured the quad is the most reasonable choice.

$164.99 $164.99
Huh? With the 4850 out there? I chose this card because right now there just aren't any 4850s I like due to inadequate cooling, and they run hot. This card has great cooling, and the MIR drops it to $135. Depending on the games you play, this card will offer plenty of performance. When a decently-cooled 4850 is released, you can upgrade then if you feel the need. For now, this is probably the one I'd buy myself.

Tough choice, but you might want the firewire port this board offers. Normally I prefer Gigabyte, but their offerings don't have it.

Model #:761345-75120-9
Item #:N82E16835209005

Cheaper fans are available, but this should be decent. Set the 3-speed switch on it, and leave it alone.

The heart of your system. This is one of the best. The MIR brings it down to $95.
Subtotal: $878.91
Well within budget, and I think I've chosen decent parts. There's room in it for a 4850 now, but like I said I just don't like the ones that are there. Maybe in a week or two some properly cooled models will be available. You may also need to buy your OS license.

ok, i know i went over just a little and heres why the X48 motherboard is far superior to the the P35s or P45s especially if you are going to add a second 4850 in there later. so it is your call but if your go to step anything down change the motherboard here is a cheap alternate...
