Work gave me a free quad core QX9650
I am looking to build a cheap box aprox $600 ( no monitot need)

I do not use my PC for Games.
My two major applications are Photoshop CS2 and DVD compression software.

What bargain hardware do you suggest?

......................wow some guys have all the luck...........

ok moving on lets see if i can help (by the way that is a $1000 CPU so please don't call this a "cheap setup" it will make me feel bad.)

also because of the unusual CPU some of the parts may seem to much but they are there so your system can handle the CPU

motherboard: EVGA 750i FTW $190

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813188026

RAM: corsair 4gb ddr2 800mhz

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145184

case: antec 300 $70

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811129042

GPU: XFX 8500gt $60

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814150268

hard drive: western digital 500gb $80

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822136073

PSU: corsair 550watt $90

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139004

subtotal: $570

now i know your thinking why in the world do i need $190 motherboard! trust me. your CPU is normally used with motherboards in the 250+ range and the reason is that much less than that can't take the power and heat out puts of the the cpu. please take my advice and get a quality PSU and a upper-mid range motherboard like the one above.

hope this helps

^ I don't think a 750i is the way to go - that chipset is for dual graphics setups.

I think that A decent P35 or P45 board will do the trick nicely. Something like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131295

The rest is fine, except I'd get a video card that will handle a little better resolutions and video playback:

Edit: with the saved money, get another 4GB of RAM, if you're using very heavily memory-intensive applications, and you have a 64-bit operating system.

Also, are you going to overclock? It'd almost be a shame to leave that CPU at stock speed.... if you want to overclock, get a nice heat sink too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835233003
