with the new core i7 processor does this mother board support dual channel as well as tri-channel memory

You can populate DIMMs on just one channel, two channels or three. But if you're after performance then you're better off populating three channels at a time since the three DDR channels will run in parallel lockstep and the memory BW to the CPU will be optimized. Using less than the three available DDR channels will result in lower memory BW performance to the CPU.
