You can build a respectable build pretty cheap, but it depends on your budget. Give us an idea there and we'll help you out.

A suggestion, since the skt939 is a "Dead" socket.

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817256045
$100 (Silverstone 700W, modular and can be used in future builds)
MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128327
$70 (Gigabyte GA-MA770-S3, no SLI but still an upgrade)
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819103211
$60 (AMD X2 5000+)retail
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820211188
$60 (A-Data 2x2GB DDR2 800)

(Prices may vary, especially when ordering through Amazon)

^IH8U's suggestion is a good start, but I'd say you should use this Muskin RAM instead

mushkin 4GB (2x2GB) $67.99 - $20 main in

What's your budget? What video card do you currently have?

my view if upgrading would be to go for something that could last for maybe a year or 2

do not add pwr supply to the price i'm buying that locally and a pretty good one...

how do i know how much power my system needs?

thanks for any help.
