very simply, ten or so minutes into a game i have a crash resulting in either a windows error message or more likely a BSOD due to ati3duag.dll at either 0x0000008e or 0x0000007e (can't remember)

i think i may be something to do with my VGA card being too advanced for my motherboard but i hope it is not that as i've already upgraded all my components and i'd be looking at a new processor as well due to a new socket (future- proofing).

i believe i have the latest versions of the bios and chipsets from AMD Nfroce4 and gigabite, but i've run the free scans off of driverdetective and driveragent and they suggest that all my drivers are not up to date

i have recently upgraded my pc's processor, VGA card, RAM and PSU from

windows xp pro sp3
ga-k8nf-9 (version 1.4) (bios version f10) nforce 4 chipset
athlon64 3500+ Venice core
Zalman CNPS7000B-CU Copper CPU cooler
radeon x800xt
1gb pc3200 RAM
2x SATA HDD
Hiper 425watt PSU

to

windows xp pro sp3
ga-k8nf-9 (version 1.4) (bios version f10) nforce 4 chipset
athlon x2 3800+ toledo core
Zalman CNPS7000B-CU Copper CPU cooler
radeon HD3870
2gb pc3200 RAM
2xSATA HDD
Corsair 450 Watt PSU

as a last resort i'll do a clean upgrade to vista to make use of the DX10, but i'd rather wait until the hotfix comes out so that i can stay with xp

really i'd like to know if i am correct, if i have the latest versions, and if not what is the problem/ where can i get them?

Download and install
KB920872
KB900485
From the Microsoft website. Should have done it when you installed SP3, but seriously like 10 minutes of your life to double check.

Very glad you posted both your specs, kudos.

Do you still have your old GFx? Try using that one if my first suggestion fails.

EDIT: Its 0x7e your getting I think

yup, they were installed with SP3. i chose to upgrade the card in order to play things like assassin's creed, as the x800xt was just hovering on the borderline of minimum specs so hopefully you can understand my reluctance to switch back to it.

Oh no, I mean temporarily, just to check.
If you use the x800t and it works perfectly without BSOD, then it suggests there is something wrong with the 3870, or the drivers for the 3870 haven't installed properly.

unfortunately it seems that it's not that simple - around the same time as the HD3870 would crash the sx800xt does, although this time it doesn't have the courtesy to show anything on the bluescreen - it's just blank.

no i didn't, i was hoping to get away without the fuss of all that - looks like i can't escape it. still, it'll just persuade me to do this vista upgrade. i'll dig my disk out and do that tonight then
