Hi-I'm sure this will get some weird responses-but here goes. I'm not a
prude, by any stretch of the imagination, but it bugs me that my reg. ed. is
full of porno sites under domains in HKEY USER section. It's fine for most
folks but I'm not interested-too old.
I hit delete for all domains (keys, values, data) but I think I did this
once before. It's under MS software. Any permanent solutions? Yes, I'm
bored!

Hi,

If you are seeing lists of porn site domains in the KEY_USER section of the
registry, it's because the system was used to visit those sites, not because
they were placed there by Microsoft. The permanent solution would be to have
a discussion with the offending user.

There has been no one else on this PC-I even installed XP PRO myself & I live
alone. There are no values attached to any of the sites. Does that help?

Then you have malware on your computer. It is completely possible for
malware to download links to pr0n sites, dialers, etc. Please go
through these malware removal steps systematically:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.co [...] ng_Malware

Do everything with updated tools in Safe Mode.

Download, install, update and run all of the following.

Ad-Aware

Spybot search and destroy

Ewido Security Suite Trial version

If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to this group so that
I can analyze it. Ignore anyone who tells you to post it elsewhere. I need
to see it not them.

Will do , pcbutts. Am in the process of doing all that Malke suggested. I
have sp2, spybot, spyblaster, NAV. Have all Windows updates & have run their
malware removal tool. Am just going to clean-up & check all that I can, use
PerfectDisk, & then check all of my registry. Will then run Hijack This &
see what happens. Thanks to all of you-there were(?) maybe 200 hundred of
these entries in the reg.. All only default with no data or values. Just
there. I thought maybe they came with SBC dsl install, or MS-but could not
believe they would have a part in that. Thanks, again

Since you didn't provide a specific location within the
registry, I'm going to offer an alternative possibility.

Are you running Spyware Blaster on your computer? Have you run
Spybot S & D and used the immunize feature? Have you used some
other security application that is designed to prevent access
from certain web sites? If you have, then those entries in your
registry might be benign.

I have Spyware Blaster installed on my main computer. It adds a
number of entries to the Restriced Sites zone within Internet
Explorer's security settings. Those sites are then listed in
the following locations on my system's registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1801674531-651377827-682003330-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

Of course, if you're finding these sites listed in other
locations within the registry then follow the advice Malke gave
you.

Good luck

Nepatsfan, hi- You hit it right on the head! I've done everything all have
suggested and there are no threats of any kind anywhere. But then I went to
Spyblaster's restricted sites and guess what? All of the porn sites are
there and not checked and/or protected. I think we fixed it!
Thanks, so much, to all.
P.S. I also removed zone map from registry and no sites now show up-we will
see if that's a problem down the line. But I own XP PRO disc so a clean
install is always an option

Why did you delete anything from the registry?

If you deleted any of the registry entries I listed in my
earlier response then you totally misunderstood the point I was
trying to make. The porn sites you saw listed in the registry
were put there by SpywareBlaster so that Internet Explorer
cannot open those web sites. In other words, seeing those sites
listed was a good thing. It meant that SpywareBlaster was
preventing your PC from accessing those sites.

Go back and check SpywareBlaster. See if the restricted sites
are checked. Also go to Start -> Control Panel and double click
Internet Options. Click on the Security tab. On the Security
page, click on "Restricted Sites" and hit the Sites button. You
should see all the sites that SpywareBlaster is blocking listed
there.

If you need to restore the registry settings you deleted, you
should use XP's System Restore feature as a first option before
resorting to a clean install.

Hi Nepatsfan-I didn't misunderstand you, although I very often do things with
the PC I should not since I usually have little idea of what I'm doing. But
fiddling with various features is what is fun for me. I bought the XP disc,
& joined this group to help protect me from me. And it's all a great
learning process.
I had removed those entries from the registry prior to reading from
you, but I had exported the registry xpriorn and then, later, imported.
All is fine now. Be patient with those like me, my friend.
