Is there much performance difference between “PCIe 2.0 x 16” and a standard “PCIe x 16”?
I just purchased two Sapphire HD 2600XT, standard PCIe x 16, that will be used in crossfire mode. My MB, Gigabyte P35-DQ6, has failed and I need to buy a new MB which will have a PCIe 2.0 x 16.
Is it worth sending back my 2 video cards for upgraded PCIe 2.0 x 16?
Personally, I haven't seen any major increases in speed yet; it helps though, no arguement there.
I still haven't seen any SLI/CF benches for PCIe2.0 vs. 1.1 yet though; at best, expect 5-10% extra preformance (and that might be way too optimistic).
You should be fine with a PCI-E 2.0 P45 motherboard for those cards. When in Crossfire on a P45, some of them run at 2.0 x8/x8 and that should be enough bandwidth for the 2600xt's. Just make sure you check the specs of the P45 board to make sure it has the two PCI-E 2.0 x8/x8 in CF option!
