Some sound you can only hear background

I have a client that has sound except when playing a cd/DVD you can only hear the background sounds. Any ideas???

What type of speaker setup is she using and what type is the sound manager set to ? (ie. if it is set to 5:1 or 7:1 and only has 2 speakers you will not have a center or rear channel so sounds set to play on those speakers will not play. )

My client has a surround system. After doing a more digging into this issue I found that the issue was caused because the client had turned the balance mode to zero. When I turned the level up to either left or right that solved the sound issue. Thank you for your efforts to help with this issue.
