I made this error go away by examining my Notepad notes
in the Palm Desktop, and deleting some of them. (One of
the ones that I deleted had strange gibberish for the
name of the note, and I suspect that was the culprit,
but I don't know that for sure.) The next hot sync
worked without that error.
Unfortunately, the "Invalid parameter to local function
(4017)" error is just one of the errors I'm seeing.
Now I need to figure out how to get it to sync the memo
pad properly. The "Invalid parameter to local function
(4017)" error is gone, but I still get errors syncing
the memo pad, though it seems to copy most of the memos in
spite of the errors. The following is pasted from "View
Log..." in Hotsync Manager 4.1.0:
-----( cut here )-----
HotSync operation started 12/07/04 02:52:32
OK Date Book
OK Address Book
OK To Do List
-- Memo Pad
- Some handheld records were not copied to your PC. Your computer
may be full or you may have reached the maximum allowed records on the
desktop. To correct this situation, delete some records and perform a
HotSync operation again.
Desktop = 561, Handheld = 560

Memo Pad synchronization failed
OK Note Pad
OK System

Note: neither the handheld nor the PC is full. I can create
new memos on either the PC desktop or the handheld, and sync
usually copies them to the other place. But some memos are
not copying, and I don't know which ones, and I don't know
why.
If you ask me, these miserable, nonspecific error messages
are just plain shoddy workmanship. Competently professional
programming means error messages that are specific enough
to point the user toward a solution. Palm did a shoddy
programming job on the Palm Desktop 4.1.4. "Some PC records
were not copied" should tell WHICH records were not copied
(or at least the first one that failed!), and why not, and
that "4017" error is even worse.

Those two numbers are the key. It's choking on a bad memo. You need to
go through the memos and find the one that's bad on the desktop.
