Hi, this is my first time posting here and I hope I posted in the right place.
Ok here's my problem, I bought an ASUS M3N78 Pro and I have a 5400 Brisbane. There's already a problem there as that board does NOT support that (I didn't know). Ok so I'm arranging for it to be returned and as I tried to remove the CPU it will not pop out.
Just to note that this is not my first time building computers as I had previous experience. I called up ASUS and they gave me this response "Go to a computer technician to have that safely removed"
I'm just disappointed with ASUS (and this is my first time trying ASUS). Any advice guys? Thanks

Just need to break the seal that the thermal grease has made. Perhaps if you can find a small paper clip that can bend flex it so you could stick the end of it between the HS and CPU to scrap away some of the thermal grease to help break the seal.
What's basically happening is like the cup of water trick with the saucer on top of the glass, then turned upside down the saucer is kept firmly from the seal that the water is doing. Kinda corny to explain, but best analogy I could compare.
So is the cooling fan on top of the processor stuck? Or is the actual processor stuck in the socket on the motherboard? If the fan is stuck to the CPU, then I'd go with what Grimmy said.
If the CPU itself (the processor) is stuck to the motherboard, be very careful. To much force could damage the processor's pins. I'd also make sure the socket is unlatched. Most of these ZIF (zero insert force) sockets have some kind of lock/latch to keep the processor from falling out of place.
I can understand Asus not directly giving you instructions as to how to remove it. If the CPU is truly stuck, it could potentially become damaged and they don't want to take liability for your CPU.
If it's the CPU to heatsink seal you're talking about then you might try heating the thermal compound by running the computer under load for awhile or using a heat gun or hair dryer. If it's the actual socket/pin interface you're having problems with then by all means go to a shop and spend the $40 to have them take it off (just don't tell too many people so they won't laugh at you).
The same thing happened to me. I got a new HSF for my 9600BE and when i took off the old hsf ...i pulled a little too hard and I pulled the CPU out of the mobo with the latch down. So I bent about half of the pins and I slowly had to get them all back in the right place. Not fun. So yes check to see if the seal is broken and dont pull too hard. Good luck.
Old AMD 939 CPU/HS installation guide. Also talks about taking the HS off, with twisting, which I guess is kinda hard when the bracket around it doesn't give much room:
Yeah I'm running an AMD 3500+ on an 939 nForce 4 mobo right now (lol my current motherboard for my Q6600 took a crap a couple days ago). Those HS brackets for the 939 setup are a pain. They could have made it a lot easier.
Hopefully XFX will get back to me soon so I can ship them my dead mobo.
I actually removed it today. I just went caveman on it and forced the lever up and down a couple of times then pop goes the weasel. It was scary the last time as I really pulled the lever like I was literally going to break it and that was the charm.
Actually went against my policy that force doesnt solve anything with electronics. But this time that totally solved everything.
Thanks for all the responses, sorry to hear about that geckoar. I was literally 5 minutes away into going to the shop and having them remove the CPU.
Sorry for the late response as with my PC being repaired I have limited computer access
Thanks again everyone.

And the CPU was OK after that? I just did the same thing. I was so surprosed as I haven't had the fan stick to the CPU like that before and I was shocked when the processor came off with the latch down. Does it damage the Mobo at all? I put the CPU back in but the latch does not hold it in place so I am assuming I have bent pins?
