Dear All,

I did a new build using QX9650 on ASUS Rampage Formula.
After a lot of research I went for Thermalright IFX-14 regarding the fact that I want my PC as silent as possible and I'm no into massive OC for 24/7 and at least for the beginning hi performance air preferred to WC.
but now I'm really concern about my core temps about 49 in idle and mid 60 for prime95 torture test and even one of cores reach 75 ! (All readings by HWMonitor from CPU ID).
There were no change in situation even after I added an extra fan to the cooler (2xthermal take 12cm ,2000 rpm fans).
considering that the max core temp by intel is 64.5 for this CPU I'm in doubt about the reason and will appreciate any idea about solving the problem. I can not dare any OC at the time and it is really waste of the money I paid for CPU.

other details are as below:
MB: ASUS Rampage Formula
RAM: Corsair 4G(2x2) dominator 1066 + Corsair tripe fan ram cooling
VGA: Sapphire 4870 (I planned for adding another one in CF)
HDD: 2x750GB Samsung F1 in Raid0 plus 1TB Samsung F1
Case: Lian-Li PC-B20
Power: Seventeam 1230W Modular

Hwmonitor does not display correct temps. In fact no software be in realtemp, coretemp, everest or otherwise can accurately display idle temp, as for load temp you'd need to manually set TJMAX according to intel's released documents. Check your motherboard's CPU sensor reading and note your distance to TJMAX (using realtemp).

You might also want to check your mounting, whether the screws are tight enough and additionally you might want to take a look at your TIM application.

I've searched the web and its like the Tjmax is 95 for QX9650 however some say it is 105. I couldn't verify either of them from intel.
here is a shot of Real temp with irs default Tjmax (95):

load temp can be read from the maximum temp bar.
my ambient is about 26 I guess.

even if this is true then I'm on the edge and there is no rrom for OC!
and if the Tjmax 105 is correct then I got serious problem at the moment.
I've already tighten the skrews to their max but the cooler is still moving which is normal with IFX-14. I've used the TR white thermal paste which was inside the box and I used a bit more than what I did on my Tuniq tower and E6850, because of the uneven shape of the IFX-14 base. the manual said the paste must be used on both CPU and Cooler base before installation.

QX9650's TJMax according to the latest documentation which was released during IDF is 95c. Anyway Intel's thermal sensors are scientifically worthless for idle temps, they're not so good for load temps either. Try basing your judgment on the distance to TJMax value which is the only value that is not altered by software.

Check that your vcore is not set too high.
Considering removing the heatsink, cleaning and reapplying paste and the remounting.

This link should help you in regards to the tjmax info: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpu [...] tjmax.html

The thermal spec is 64.5°C, which would be the Tcase sensor max, which would have nothing to do with the tjmax.

Might be better off just depending on the Tcase sensor which is basically an IHS reading. (Your MB Asus Probe would display as a single CPU temp) and not worry about the core temps.

Almost sounds like an airflow problem, which will prolly be worse when you add another 4870 to your rig. I'm also guess your prolly not even using a fan on the HS?

That's why I asked for his motherboard's cup sensor reading AKA CPU temp. They're usually in decent enough shape to verify if those high temps are remotely valid.
