hi,
I've read a (VERY old) article in TH about using a Pentium M CPU in a computer to get very low power requirements (50 watts total).
Can I use modern day mobile CPUs like that (T series)? How much will it cost (MB+CPU)? Are there any limitations on it?
I thought about making an extremely quiet HTPC like that...

If you were looking @ making an extremly quite home PC, your best option would be a modern low-power desktop dual core CPU, especially sokme of AMD's latest offerings. The added advantage to choosing the AMD route is the 780G platform, which is fantastic for HTPCs and Budget PCs.
AMD's Cool 'n' Quiet driver will let the computer lower the CPU's frequency when idling to further decrease power consumption.

AMD Athlon X2 4050e 2.1GHz 45W $60

GIGABYTE GA-MA78GPM-DS2H 780G (Has 128 MB Sideport memory) $105

Total for CPU+Mobo $165

I would also get a passive cooler, but that would require a fairly decent case.

ive never heard anything about doing that with a mobile processor, but then again i dont know that much about that stuff. Something you could look at is a solid state hard drive. Last i checked they are very expensive, but since they dont have disks, it should be pretty silent. Youre also greatly limited on storage capacity with them. on new egg you can get 120-128Gb for like $500, but theyre not as fast as some things like 2 raptors in raid 0(which also costs a lot less), and idk about the reliability so far with them.
