In theory, there is a way. In practice, you might not have what is needed.
If your player can't handle any HD content, maybe some computer software
can (then it's a matter of what your computer has). But I would think that
a future HD-DVD or Blu-Ray machine would handle "legacy DVDs" and even be
able to handle HD content from them. OTOH, many manufacturers are quite
creative in making things not work, so good luck.

Not in any available standalone player.
If you have a DVD drive in a sufficiently powerful computer you could
play a data stream off the drive if it is fast enough. If it isn't, you
can copy the data to a hard drive and play it from there.
