I'm not sure which board this should go into since there's multiple issues...

BACKGROUND:

I reformatted my computer, partitioned my hard drive into a C:20GB (for Windows) and D:240GB and did a fresh insall of XP Media Cener.

PROBLEMS:

1. My computer only shows my C drive (20G). It does not show my D drive (rest of hard drive). Is there a way to get my computer to recognize it?

2. My computer also has a yellow sign next to a PCI device in Device Manager. I have no idea what it could be. Both my video and audio drivers are installed (which are the only PCI cards in my computer)... What could it be?

3. My ethernet does not seem to be working. I cannot connect to the internet at all. It shows up in the Network connectons but has a red "x" on it. The latest drivers are installed from the mobo's manufaturing site. My set up right now is a cabe wire to the modem, an ethernet cable from modem to router, an ethernet cable from router to my computer. My laptop gets the internet just fine from the modem, so it's not the network. I've tried to uninstall the ethernet driver and then reboot. I've tried to unplug the modem and router for a while and then plug them back in and then turn on my computer but that didn't work. Could this be related to my second question?

Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

Sounds like your missing some mobo drivers. Get your CD out and install everything on it.

As for the rest of the Hard drive you can get it back via Diskmanagement, "right click on my computer and click manage" from there it is self explanitory.

Went to Disk Management and am now in the process of reformatting my second partition. It was "unallocated" before which is why I couldn't access it. Thanks roadrunner!

I will try to uninstall the drivers for the ethernet and uninstall the PCI device and then put in my cd for the mobo drivers and then reboot. We'll see what happens...

ADDITIONAL QUESTION:

1. Now when I try to shut down my computer it starts back up again on its own for some reason. Why would that be the case?

Your welcome.

Either a short in the powerbutton or maybe the PSU is shorting out in some wierd way.

What is the mobo you are using? Me and a couple friends had abit ip35-e's and it did the same thing. Turns out there was an issue with the bios. Flashed them and all better.

Well I uninstalled the pci unknown device and then rebooted and it recognized it (some audio thing for onboard high tech blah blah blah) so that's taken care of...

As for the powering up on its own bit there was an option checked off that said if the computer had an error or something it would reboot itself. I checked that off. Problem fixed...

Now for the main problem: I still can't get my stinkin ethernet to connect to the internet. I went to command prompt to find out what the deal was with the isp but it said that the ethernet was: "media disconnected".

Should I just try to use the modem through usb instead of ethernet? WOuld a usb connection run slower than ethernet? How could I fix this problem?

kyeana: I have a gigabyte mobo...

Thanks guys...

Uninstal/ reinstall you ethernet drivers. Make sure the light on the port is working.

Reply to roadrunner197069

I've uninstalled and reinstalled many times... the light on the port is green so that's fine.

My ip config says that IP routing is not enabled... should it be? And if it should how would I do it?
On a different site it says (to someone who had a similar problem) to Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog and
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reply to potsofclay

Have you reset the modem/router "both"? It might need reset to issue your PC a differnt IP address. I cant just plug in from pc to pc, or xbox on mine. I have to reset the modem when I make different connections.

Reply to roadrunner197069

Yep, I've unplugged both of them with the computer off for a little while thenplugged the modem in untill all lights were on then plugged the router in untill all lights were on and thenbooted up... Nothing!

Reply to potsofclay

Maybe the port is dead? Try a PCI ethernet card or wireless usb.

have you tried plugging the computer directly into the modem with a cable that you know works?

Reply to kyeana

When I type in ipconfig /all I get:

Node Type: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled : No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
Media State: Media disconnected
Physical Address 00-00-00-00-00-00

And I thought that the powering itself on was fixed but I came home with the power on (after leaving having it powered off). I want to say that it takes about a half hour for it to power on. It's not an immediate thing. Is there some option that would cause this in the BIOS or somewhere else?

I tried a USB connection for the modem but I got a yellow exclaimation mark with no access again... I don't know wha the heck is going on... but it's really frustrating...

no physical address...hmmm interesting. I think that would mean that either the drivers didn't get installed correctly or your Ethernet port is dead. It is my understanding that even if you aren't connected to a network you will still get a MAC address from your Ethernet port, because thats where the address comes from anyways. It might be time to RMA.

However, here are some shots in the dark that you can test and see if they change anything

-Do you have the TCP/IPv4 set to obtain ip and dns automatically?
-Do you have TCP/IPv6 disabled?
-Reset the WINSOCK entries by typing "netsh winsock reset catalog" in the command prompt (i believe that is what it is)
-I guess you could try flushing the DNS. Somehow i dont thing that would fix it and is a complet shot in the dark, but is very easy to do and would at least rule that out. Type "ipconfig /flushdns" in the command prompt.

Reply to kyeana

Well if it worked before, you screwed something up when installing drivers. reformat and try again.

Reply to roadrunner197069

kyeana: Thanks for trying to help! In response to your questions: I have the ip and dns set to obtain automatically. I don't think I have the TCP disabled, how would I know that? Where is that option located? I tried resetting the WINSOCK and flushing the DNS through the command prompts...

First off did flushing your DNS or reseting the WINSOCK change the results of ipconfig /all? Specifically are you still getting 00-00-00-00-00-00 for a physical address? If that is the case then most likely the drivers you have are bad or the actual ethernet port is bad. I would try getting online and see if there are any new drivers out for your mobo that could fix this problem. Try to find the newest drivers, and if they are the drivers you currently have download them again anyways to make sure yours aren't corrupted somehow.

As for the TCP/IPv6 you can check it from start > Network connection > Local Area Connection > TCP/IPv6 (if you have it), although i doubt this would be the problem if you aren't even getting a MAC address.
