Stick with 8800 GTX SLI or change to GTX 280?

One of my cards is making a racket so i will be RMA'n it. Annoying as it's 3 months old!

Couple of things.

First off the cards i have SLI'd have become fairly rare, BFG 8800 GTX OC2's.

If i get a refund the price difference to a single GTX 280 makes it very tempting.

I have had a quick hunt and i have found it very difficult to find comparisons between these two set ups.

I did find one that gave the advantage to the SLI by a few fps (5) in most cases.

Though it did state that in games like Crysis the SLI did fair better.

With games like Warhead coming out is it worth upgrading now?

How much will the newer drivers improve the performance of a GTX 280 over time??

Plus with Physx being on card will that make much of a difference, though i do have a separate PPU card.

Keep the 8800gtx sli, the gap between it and a single gtx280 is far more than just 5 fps in most games. It's a fairly big downgrade, not worth it.

Few games even use physx, and since you have a discrete card for it, it's fine even for games that do.

The 8800gtx sli will handle new games better than a single gtx280.

I have an 8800 GTX SLI'd rig, and will keep it till the next gen (post 280) cards come out. As Dagger noted, the SLI beats the 780 in every bench worth mentioning.

The next driver update will give us the physix useability, thereby giving no reason to "upgrade". (Upgrade itch difficult to scratch now)

Now, 2 x 4870, hmmmmm.

But my shiny 60 day old 790i board is still giving me a good time!

I'm getting the general idea that you think an upgrade is a bad thing :) .

I'm just hoping that i can get the same cards and not receive a lower spec vanilla and have to OC it.
