Mixing Ram

I know you can mix diffrent types of ram but is it recomended? i have 2x1gb corsair dominator and i wanted to get 2x2gb corsair dominator sticks?

Hi.
If your board supports it, depends on the Memory manager, most now days do, but you will have to get the same speed, if not it will default to the slowest.
One thing to consider, what OS, 32, 64 bit, what Video Memory (256, 512) size you have, they all add up. An OS like XP 32 bit can only handle around 3GB, you will have 6, 3 will be wasted. You will need a 64 Bit OS.

Just want to correct this. If we are talking about types, we're pointing about DDR, DDR2, DDR3, SDRAM and so on. Mixing two different types of RAM is impossible. If your motherboard supports two memory types of RAM then you can use only one type of RAM. You can't install two types of RAM simultaneously because it will create a error or worst burn.

Maybe you're talking about the brands, capacities and frequencies of RAM. Yes you can mix different brands, capacities and frequencies as long your motherboard supports it.

Examples:
Example 1: It's ok to mix DDR2-533(266MHz) and DDR2-800(400MHz), but I will not recommend this because the frequency of DD2-800(400MHz) will down clock to the frequency of DDR2-533(266MHz). That will not help your computer operate faster.

Example 2: It's ok to mix DDR2-1066(533 MHz) and DDR2-800(400MHz). I will recommend this because the frequency of DD2-800(400MHz) and the frequency of DDR2-1066(533 MHz) are just close. This will help your computer operate faster.

thanks... a little off from what i was asking. I know that you can mix ram Brands/ diffrent capacities, im asking if its a good thing to do. just like you CAN overclock your cpu, but it sometimes isnt the best thing to do and can cuase instability and problems
