is it true that when ssds fail they just stop writing and all data remains in it, you just cant write anymore, just read?

Not necessarily. That's one possible failure mode, but they could also fail in a way that you would lose all of your data.

That's said to be the "normal" failure mode for an SSD drive, but as cjl indicated you certainly can't rely on your drive failing that way.

Exactly. If it happened to you, it would be nice compared to the failure of a traditional hard drive, but you definitely can't count on that failure mode. You should always have a good backup of any data that you would mind losing (even if it is on an SSD).
