I just built a new system and i bought a 2 gig stick of supertalent 800mhz and then decided to buy a set of 1gig x2 dual channel to add to the other stick. My os windows xp 32bit so only 3.3 gigs recognizes but i was wondering if i will lose any performance compared to 2 1gigx2 sets dual channel. Also is my first 2 gigs dual channel if they are in the right slot?
i know which slots to put them in but is it possible to have 1 set dual channel and the last stick not.I have 3 sticks of ram all together and makes up 4 gigs
I wouldn’t worry too much about not having dual channel working on your motherboard as it would only make a difference of between 1% and 3% hardly noticeable except on benchmarks, certainly not worth spending any money on.
ok but i was just wondering if thats a good setup?1gigx2 dual channel and 2gig x1 non dual channel
No, that is not a good setup.
With an odd number of sticks, you will not run in dual mode. If it is a core 2 cpu, it won't make much difference.
The best is to get a 4gb kit in a 2x2gb configuration. A 32 bit OS will see about 3.4gb of it.
Also be wary of mismatched sticks. Some motherboards will be very sensitive to that. Assuming that it works, you will be running at the specs of the slowest stick.
well they are all supertalent 800mhz i just have a 2 gig set of dual channel and then a 2 gig stick non dual channel. besides the dual channel issue.will i lose performance since the last stick is just a single stick and not 2?
If you put in the 4 gig of memory you have, your motherboard will not run in dual channel mode and you will lose 1 to 3% in performance compared with if you only put in the (2 x1) gig of memory you have. On the other hand by putting in the 4 gig you will gain about another 1 and a quarter gig of memory for your programs to use with maybe a slight improvement in the operation of your computer depending on the applications that you use. If you were buying ram now it would have been better to get 2 x 2 gig of memory but with what you have got it is not worthwhile changing your memory. If this was my computer I would put in the extra memory and not worry about not running in dual channel mode.
i mostly run games on my computer. i have 8800gt 512, pentium D, asus p5k-e, 500watt psu. i just wanted to know if i was losing much performance because im one of those guys that worry my ass of with things
