Hi There:

So my mom's pc decided the other night it was going to stop booting. I pulled the case apart thinking it was the PSU. The case/cpu fans come on for about a second then shut off. I decided to start unplugging drives etc to try and narrow things down, no luck. Finally I unplugged the 4pin ATX cable (black/yellow cable with 4 pins that goes to the mb). The fans stayed running when this was disconnected, but nothing would boot.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong based on this info?

Thanks
maichu

I had somthing similar a while back, try unplugging it from the power for about ten mins, and in the meantime resetting the bios.

turned out with my computer it was stuck in a suspend state, when you pressed the power it tried to wake up and went straight back to sleep.

Just a thought before you start doing expensive things like buying hardware.... If its not the above problem, PSU or MB sound most likely.

When someone says they pulled the 4pin CPU power plug and the board stayed on I think of the CPU electrical circuit.
Look very carefully around the CPU for burned components.
You might have a bad CPU, but it can be the motherboard or the PSU.
Like will said start with a bios reset if you find no burned parts. Also use your nose, and see if you smell anything like a burn smell coming from the PSU.

ok so I went to put the new PSU in...pc seemed to stay running so i powered it down to bring it over to test on a monitor. When I plugged it back in and turned it on, PSU wouldn't start up.

I'm thinking faulty PSU brand new outta the box?
