2 4850 vs. 4 3850

So what do you guys think? 2 HD4850s or 4 HD3850s? Thinking of building a system for the first time. I'm a go big or go home type a guy when it comes to buying anything but usually there is a limit on the amount of money I can spend otherwise I'd go for as many GTX280s I could get my hands on. I have around a $3,000 budget so any other suggestions would kick ass too. What do you guys recommend?

Get 2 HD 4850 cause theoretically 2 hd 4850 ~ = 4 hd 3850 but in real world, with ati drivers ,you would get better performance with 2 hd 4850 for sure. If your budget is around 3000$ lol then why not waiting 1 or 2 weeks and then get an HD4870 X2 which would be much better.
August 6, 2008 3:33:04 PM

In benches, the 4850 usually meets or beats a 3870X2, meaning two 4850s would probably meet or beat four 3870s, but given drivers and scaling and stuff, it would really depend more on software than hardware after a while. I'd say this...

1 4850 = 2 3870s = 3870X2 > 2 3850s
2 4850 = 4 3870s = 2 3870X2 > 4 3850s

I agree with elie3000, with that big of a budget you could probably get two 4870x2 on a x48 mobo with 8gb of ddr2 and Q9450 or 9550.
August 6, 2008 3:39:07 PM

...can you even RUN 4 3850's? Heck, do you even have that many PCI-E slots?
August 6, 2008 3:42:31 PM

Thats probably a good idea bc I plan on waiting anyways which will then give me a bigger budget in the end too. Thanks guys!
August 6, 2008 3:42:36 PM

August 12 is just around the corner...wait for the 4870X2...
August 6, 2008 3:45:26 PM

wow...a $3000 budget?!?!?!?!? thats crazy man...you're my idol...but whatever you do, please dont get an extreme edition cpu...
August 6, 2008 3:48:52 PM

I guess the 3850s just appealed to me bc then I can go around a be like: I'VE GOT 4 GRAPHICS CARDS, WHAT NOW BITCH!! but I'll wait for the 4870X2 and get two so I can still be like I GOT 4 GPUs, WHAT NOW BITCH!!

Ah yes, nothing like the proverbial 10 inch e-penis.

With those cards make sure you get at least a 24 inch monitor.
August 6, 2008 4:49:18 PM

Oh yea def. 24 in already had one picked out. Kno of any real good reasonably priced headphones?
August 6, 2008 5:01:21 PM

icemat siberias ftw
August 6, 2008 5:10:32 PM

You want graphics performance or a showoff rig ?? please don't be like those richy guys who just say: wana see inside mah case fool?!?! I own 4 graphics card!! oh lol ... buddy thrust me, i've met a couple, they just end up replacing hardware 3 months latter with a total spent of 5000$ for his main rig... and ofc... as you got the gold, you wont think twice at upgrade time with the shinny new high-end graphics card future may hold...

So you can buy 3 4850 at the price of 4 3870... not saying the performance kick a55! and if you cant wait till 12 Aug for the R700... get as much 4870 you can afford instead of as much 280 you can afford !!!!!!!

August 6, 2008 5:15:41 PM

yea dude I'm not trying to get a flashy set up I just want to kno whats the best way to get good performance. And I would never buy a GTX280 because its overpriced just b/c its the best out there so far I was just saying if money wasn't an issue...but it always is

Look at Sennheiser - the EH350 is good, or the HD595 for a bit more money.

August 6, 2008 5:29:00 PM

does anyone kno the price of the 4870X2 when it comes out. Or any accurate guesses? I hope its low enough for me to get two. That would kick ass!
August 6, 2008 5:33:06 PM

no ones completely sure , but around the $500-$600 mark is the rumour

for good reasonably priced headphones , i went for creative fatality which is ample for gaming etc.

i think if they made an HD4850X2 that might be the better buy for me. But is AMD gonna make one? probably not i guess

August 6, 2008 6:07:53 PM

from what i read, AMD let the vendors set the refereance clocks and the kind of memory they want to use. if they use gddr3, its gonna be a 4850x2....if they use gddr5, its going to be a 4870x2.
August 6, 2008 6:08:37 PM

oh, and i prefer HIS or Sapphire. they've never served me wrong...a couple other vendors have...

4 Graphics cards is cool if your running 8 monitors. With your 4870x2's and high budget I would go for 4 monitors.
August 7, 2008 12:26:09 PM

That would be sick and a little over excessive but I like the idea. Do most games have multi-monitor support? Never really researched it or had two or more monitors to play on.
August 7, 2008 12:59:38 PM

Unfortunately very few games feature multi-monitor support. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are MS Flight Simulator (can handle running on as many screens as you want I beleive) and Supreme Commander makes use of a second monitor. Its great for multi-tasking though. Nothing like having Sports center on my left screen, browsing the web and doing work on the main screen, then having media player playing music, yahoo running, my windows sidebar etc. on my right screen.
August 7, 2008 1:25:26 PM

yea dude my friend has the freaking command center setup. I go over to his house for new years hes got Scarface playing on his 17" laptop to his right iTunes going on his 19" 4:3 and his X360 and desktop hooked up to a 40 in HDTV with a 5.1 logitech on the TV. I'm like um jealous...

That looks like an awesome build terror, but what I'm wondering. Would it be better to go with lets say 8GB of cheaper ram (XMS2) and disable the page file, or go with 2GB of fast ram and keep the page file. The page file is one of the most detrimental things to system performance, so I'm thinking that route would be better, especially when using non-10k drives.

The only other thing that I can think of that I'd change from that build is the soundcard, personally, I like Auzentech's offerings more.

it's a little late but visiontek has best warranty, but more important good service

Well, It all depends on what OS is he going to use. If he wants to go 32bit, that setup would be optimal for it, but if he would want to go with a 64bit OS, then 8gb of cheaper memory would be optimal. It all depends on his intended use of the machine. And as for the sound card, I am not too familiar with the other brands, but I am fairly happy with my X-FI Extreme music.

I definitely hear you on that one, but if he's going for that bad ass rig, chances are he's going to want to use Vista. The reason I have mentioned the alternative sound card, is because Creative is horrible with Vista support, especially x64, which would be optimal due to 8GB of ram and no page file. No page file sounds so, so good to me.
