How do I default to another sound device on winXP home?

I have winXP home and need to default to another sound device such as Lagacy Audio driver. I have a Dell pc, optiplex. My system is missing dsound.dll so I get No Audio. My lagacy audio shows working properly in my device manager but won't let me select another sound device such a my lagacy audio device. Do I need another sound card? Thank you.
