I'm voting for the HD 4850. $155, and way more powerful than the 8800GTX I bought a year ago for $651.

...0-$1000 or 0-$100?

0-$100 would probably be a ATI 3850.

0-$1000 would be tri-SLI 280 GTX's.

Best card for the $$ ever? Voodo 2/3.

Can I vote for another one too? The 8800GTS 320MB - it used to be the best card for the money at the time. I suspect it sold more units than any other card in nVidia's history.

I honestly have to tell all of you that not everyone have unlimited budget and for many of us spend more than us$160 it´s not possible. IMO

one of the best cards i ever had was a ATI All In Wonder 128 PRO, I had it for almost 6 years and it runs smooth and was perfect for design and video editing for its capability of capture video trough RCA plug in.

and in this moment I´m running a 9600GT en a P650 board and it´s perfet to me.

8800 gt 512 MB... I have 2 of these in SLI and it cost $220 and it faster than a $450 GTX 280.

  Talk about memories. I had a Banshee then a Voodoo 3. Value for money I would say the Banshee over the Voodoo 3 (back then).

Right now Radeon HD4850. After rebates most places are averaging around $165. Alot of bang for the buck.

+1 for the 4850

i remember my old agp X800 PRO was a beast of a card. destroyed nvidia's 6800. it's a lot better than an 8400 too, which i thought was funny. played crysis on low/med
not bad for a 4+ year old card :D
August 6, 2008 10:04:16 PM

I would vote for the 8800GT.

At a price point of 110 US$ is really good, and it's also scalable to higher resolutions if you have an SLI board.

For me it has to be GeForce4 4200ti 128MB..... I kept it 4 years ! And that is the longest time I've kept a video card. IMO there was no need to get a newer one until the 6800GS PCI-E.
August 7, 2008 12:19:44 AM

best card for money is 8600gt
August 7, 2008 12:48:11 AM

I vote..
Radeon 3200 IGP :p
Pretty nifty platform in a tablet pc, my Tablet ACTUALLY plays games *gasp!*
August 7, 2008 1:44:52 AM

The best card I ever had was an ATI 9800 pro, now I have an 8800GT, so far so good.
August 7, 2008 2:17:16 AM

i had a 9600XT for years that serverd me well, i still have to use it to diagnose problems with agp boards.

ya i had a banshee too. it did well up until one of the first games that came out with T&L, i think it was Will Rock.

since your in the ATI section of the boards, i would say todays 4850 is a nice overall choice for the money.
August 7, 2008 2:18:06 AM

wow memory lane here.

Banshee-Voodoo3-Geforce 256-Geforce2 GTS -Geforce3 ti200, ATI 9500 pro OC'd, ATI9800pro, nvidia 6600gt, Nvidia 7800gt pci, and now ATI 4870 pci-e.

These are the cards i used for gaming. I've owned probably about every flippin card from nvidia up through the geforce3, then skipped then back for the 6600gt and 7800gt. ATI didn't really get it together for me until the 9500pro / 9700pro era... then it went to nvidia , then back now i think.

Anyway, best card for ~300 bucks. 4870 hands down.
August 7, 2008 2:31:49 AM

9800GTX was onsale for $149 last week.
August 7, 2008 2:47:25 AM

you guys remember that forum discussion about the GTX350? XD
August 7, 2008 2:55:16 AM

Nvidia 9500GT and Ati HD 4850 the best price^^
August 7, 2008 3:07:47 AM

I thought the ti4200 I had was a great performing card for quite a while, however I think the 4850 at it's current price is just about the best deal ever for GPUs. It makes me angry though because I have had money to buy my GPUs at the worst times ever.

Um sure I guess? I think your splitting hairs though but my bad
August 7, 2008 3:20:04 PM

So do you guys think graphics cards will go up in money? I dont think they possibly would I'm just thinking of waiting for the new stuff to come out and buy a new card for a cheap price.
August 7, 2008 3:31:02 PM

There's always new stuff supposed to come out. For example there's this video card made by Intel, based on 10 nm technology, it will be out in 2017 and it will play Crysis at 200 fps. Just be patient, it's coming...

Now seriously, you can buy an HD 4850 for $155 and it plays anything well. There's nothing coming out until next spring that can compete with that AFAIK. There will be the HD 4870x2, much more powerful, but over $500. Then the 4850X2, which won't be cheap either. That's about it for 2008.

YES!! I CAN'T WAIT!! I'm saving up all my money for this one! I'm gonna use it to play Warcraft 2!! but seriously that sounds pretty sweet and I'm sure theres gonna be more exciting things coming out as well. Cant wait for DDR10
August 7, 2008 4:37:42 PM

4870x2 will be out soon enough (less than a month) that if you want to spend $$ which it appears you do then get that or even 2 of them and you are set for quite sometime. if not wanting to spend that kind of bank then go with what is available right now based on your budget. there is nothing lower budget coming out SOON that will be better then what is available.

2 x hd 4850s in crossfire it will rock

i had/have ti 4400 for 6+ years and it still rocked after upgrading to the 3870x2 i learned what dx was about but in my opinion not much faster

Best card for the money, bar none, is the HD 4850. I have never seen such value for the performance before. It's truly amazing. This card bests the 8800GTX which only a few months before the HD 4850 launch was around $550 dollars. Ive never seen such value before in a card as far as launch prices are concerned.

Some other cards that have really pushed the limits on Price/Performance on my list:

8800GT launched for around $270 and offered about the same performance as the 8800GTX which was around $650 at the time. Destroyed the 8800GTS 320 which was around $330.

3850 launched for $170 and offered 8800GTS (g80) performance at half the price. It also introduced many HTPC features and an extremely low power requirement for the performance.

Radeon 9550, while I don't remember the launch price, it offered much better performance than the FX series, and through modding, it could be "unlocked" to a 9700. Great card.

Nvidia 6800GS, not sure what the launch price was, but it was priced great and could have it's pixel pipeline and vertex shaders unlocked to boost it up to it's higher performing model the 6800v and with overclocking, to the 6800 Ultra.

The HD4850 is excellent now, but lets not forget we have seen even midrange cards spank the previous top end before. Look what the 6600GT did, the 9500 pro, the Ti4200, etc. Granted, pricing right now is excellent though (USA anyway).

Right now, the HD4850 is hard to top. Not everyone can afford one, but if they can it's money well spent. It does have it's challengers IMO for best bang/buck though with $70AR 8800GS/9600GS0 and the HD3850 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?Product...

Shoot, the HD2600XT for $28 AR is a lot of bang for the buck.
