I'm building a new system for around £600 to £650.

I've got an idea which is - Intel E8400
512 mb 9800gtx xt
1 TB hard drive
4 gb ram 4-4-4-12 (800 mhz)
Asus P5Q Pro
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme 7.1
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 CPU Cooler
700W EZCool Infinity PSU
Aplus CS-188AF ATX case

I was just wondering if this would be a good build for someone who plays a few games and will probably overclock it.

Marcasino that looks like a good build you should be fine, the E8400 has problems with the temp readings on it.it doesn't mean the cpu is bad it just don't read core-0 and core -1 correctly.mine reads on speedfan and coretemp etc core0=17 core1=37 but the pc runs just fine, also if you want to save a few dollars, motherboard on board sound now adays has pretty good sound.hope this help you out.

The GFX card is the only thing I would consider "weak" (in comparision to the new cards comming out), unless you plan to throw a second one in there. That being said, you should be fine for most games with that setup.

1tb is a little much you'll have a hard time filling half of it. you will save some money getting a 750gb drive with a 32mb cache.

the e8400 is a great processor for overclocking and gaming. but if you plan on working with a lot of media files and encoding get a q6600

i would go with the ati 4850 instead of the 9800gtx. the 4850 is a little better and a good $50 cheaper. plus you can crossfire with that motherboard incase you want the extra power later

im not an expert on overclocking but i think if you want a high overclock its easier with ram over 1000mhz

i dont know how much your planning to spend on a sound card. but if you plan on spending over $100 get a X-Fi Titanium card. i would only get a sound card if you plan on using nice speakers because your not going to see much of a difference with cheap speakers

everything else looks great and good luck

"Now if the 4870x2 was actually notably faster than the 280 for about the same price, then I might even take a chance on it. However, that won't be the case."
