Hi all, first off just a quick apology as im guessing you get millions of these types of questions! ive spent the past few days trying to get a impartial compaison on the Core 2 Duo E4600 & Phenom X3 8600B but with no real joy at all.
Ive basically got a choice between two systems one with a Core 2 Duo E4600 and the other the Phenom X3 8600B and im basically wanting to find out which is the best one to go for
The Intel CPU will be the faster of those two, except in a few situations where the third core might be utilized.... and even then probably a tie at best. You can pretty much count on Intel beating out AMD at the same Ghz.
I can't say that would be a huge upgrade over your current machine however. Both CPUs fall quite near your X2, when you look at the big picture.
If you are looking to upgrade I would suggest at least an E7200, or don't bother.
Simply put, if you will not overclock, get the X3 8600B, as I'm quite sure it's slightly faster, and a lot faster especially if the programs you're using. It also multitasks slightly better, like no delay when making an antivirus scan while playing a game.
If you overclock... Well, let's just simply say that Intel processors overclock a lotta better but.....
..... If you only planning to buy el cheapo motherboards for them. Don't go with the Core2Duo processors. You'll have a very hard time overclocking Core2Duo's with crappy motherboards. You'll have an easier time overclocking AMD processors with crappy motherboards.
This new machine is basically being bought for me ,its either a laptop at the same price or one of these new machines, so not a upgrade as such just a new machine which in my eyes would be a nice new platform to work from and easier to upgrade in the future compared to my current setup. a laptop in the same price bracket would not be an ideal option in my eyes.
Well, since both are PC specs from HP/Acer, it's like choosing which is the lesser evil. It's basically impossible to overclock such motherboards, effectively negating the biggest advantage of the Core2Duo processors.
well, what will you use this computer for? because if you do video editing or other multicore optimised stuff, then most likely the 3 core AMD will be ever so slightly faster, but for games, and most apps which dont have very well implemented multithreading, the dual will probably win handsomely
