Passport studio as additional storage

I just purhased an installed my passport studio 500Gig, and it plugeed and played with time machine, but HOW DO I USE IT FOR ADDITIONAL STORAGE ON MY MACBOOK PRO, which is out of drive space, which incidentally is the only reason I bought the thing to begin with

Is it for MAC? Usually it would say so right on the box. If not, you can format it for MAC, but I'm unsure of any PC based software that would do the job.
