More Information

I am going to be upgrading some things in my computer and I want to see what everyone thinks.

This is what I am currently running:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115021

GPU: Just sold my Evga 8800GTS 320

RAM: CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1142
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145169

MB: ABIT IN9 32X-MAX LGA 775 Nvidia nForce 680i SLI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] %2b32X-MAX

Monitor: SAMSUNG 2253BW Black 22" 2ms
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6824001268

OS: Vista prem 32bit

Here is what I would like to do:

I would like to go with 4gigs of ram but it is to much to buy another two of what I have now. So I was thinking that I could sell them and go with this RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145197

I am not sure about the GPU, I am waiting to see what the X2 has but I am also thinking about how I will not be able to crossfire because of my current MB.

Any advice would really be appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: my budget is $500 without selling the ram...hopefully I can sell it though. Come on craigslist!

HD 4870X2 won't be out for a while. Your wait may be 1-2 months. My suggestion is to look at the benchmarks of the games you play or plan to play and pick out the winner. nvidia is cutting their prices.

What's your psu make & model?

Also, 32 bit may limit you on the ram, so may want to consider 64 bit OS.

It limits it to 3.5 right? That would still improve over 2 for sure...

No, Vista 32 can use up to 4 gigs, unlike XP 32. If you go 64bit, you can max out the ram amount.

^no vista 32 Bit will limit @ 3GB AFAIK, it still realises it has 4GB available though.
The 32 Bit limit also includes Video memory and any caches, which is why there is a RAM limit in the OS.

I seriously would get 64 Bit if I were you.

Well what do you think about the RAM it self? That would work with my mobo right?

$330.00 is way overpriced, regardless of speed.

I agree with that! I dont know what I was thinking with I bought that RAM...now I want 4gig and it is to much to buy another 2gig of the same RAM, that is why I posted the link for another set of RAM off of newegg. What do you think of that and I believe that my mb will support it as well.

If I was you, I'd grab either Vista 64-bit Home Basic ($90) or 64-bit Home Premium ($110), 2x2GB OCZ Reaper DDR2 800 ($63 after MIR), and a HD4870 ($255 after MIR). That's $400 and change, and if you really wanted to spend the rest of your budget you could get another set of the OCZ Reaper RAM.

To my knowledge the 3-4GB 32-bit max includes video and system ram.
So if you were to get a 1 or 2 GB 4870x2 you would only get 0-1 gb more ram addressable ram.

So I would say get a 64-bit OS or don't really bother with the ram upgrade.
Maybe even check out ready boost and a cheap(ensure still fast) USB memory stick.

When I used RC1 Vista Ultimate I got a 20% benchmarking boost by adding a 2gb SD card to my internal card reader so I just left it in there.

Video card it will be awhile for the 4870x2.
So it really depends on whether you need one today or not.

If you need one now you may consider getting a 8800 Gt 3870 or 9600 GT to tide you over until 4870x2 release.
None are great but they are around $120 and would be minor increase over the 8800 GTS 320 which you no longer have.
Then depending on how good you are on e-bay you may be able to get a decent chunk of it back, or if you know gf/cousin whatever who it would still be a good upgrade for you could gift it as early x-mas(or x-mas gift on time depending on when 4870x2 hits availability).  I'd guess they're hoping to get it out by back to school time though.
