I left my desktop PC on overnight, only to return to it this morning, finding that both of my screens were in sleep mode, and wouldn't wake up. Whatever. So I restart it, and I'm greeted with a horrid bizarre blaze of colors, symbols, and squares. Something happened to my x1650xt!

I let the card cool down - no change
Replaced the thermal paste/reseated the card - no change
Put the card in another computer - no change
Put a different card in my computer - runs fine.

Windows Event viewer shows no significant changes/actions during the time it went down.

GREAT.

So, now that you can't find x1650xt's anymore, does anyone recommend a card to buy in replacement? Mind you, it has to be AGP, and my system is getting spaced out on power, so I'd prefer it to be under the same design of the x1650xt.

I've been thinking about the 2600XT, but I don't know if my PSU can handle it. It's a good unit, served me well, but there is a LOT of stuff attached to this system.

The 2600xt is a nice card. I bought the PCIe variant early this year. ATI recommends a 550 Watt PSU with 26 amps (thats what the manual says).
Currently i'm running it on a dual core opteron with 1GB ram and a no name 400 Watt PSU without trouble.
I hope this helps.

Well I would say go with a hd 4850 if you have good case cooling. The only downfall with it is that hot air will be spewed into your case which really sucks for a cpu oc.

Is your opty overclocked?

the 3850 is a little out of reach for my measly athlon 2800.

the 4850 won't work, obviously; it's pci-e

No. A simple 185 on a cheap asrock board with a small 80gb hard drive.

I just checked and the PSU is dirt cheap. It's a no name 420 watt with 13 amps on the 12volt rail. It was quite hot during the last few weeks but even during 31+ C° weather the machine kept running at full load without a hitch.

You could try and find an X1950 card locally or on Ebay.Maybe upgrade to a newer more powerfull card such as this 3850! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814102730
Definetly kick the crap out of your old card!

a 2600pro or xt may be a good buy for you. it's not all that fast, but it's not a power-hungry card.
