How Bad is This System?

I built this system a while back, 5 years ago. I want to know what you think of it. How does it compare to products today, would these specs have been considered High Performer back then. What do you think?

I don't have detailed specs on it.

Intel Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz

512MB DDR of RAM

MSI Geforce MX4000 128MB 64 bit

60GB HDD 7200RPM

Plextor CD-RW

fairly low end I guess,
5 years ago, 2003, Radeon 9800's where out and steamrolled that video card
Pentium 4's clocked at 3.2 ghz where available at the time
1 gig was considered optimal for gaming back then
as for the hard drive, I guess it was the standard for best price/performance back then

Today, you could get a system that would perform easily 8-10x better for 3d and gaming, and would run far snappier for all other applications

I would only use that for media server/internet/torrent box.

Probably the only game I would consider playing on that is a quake III variant.

My favorite part: "How does it compare to products today"!!!!!

Intel Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz - It could take 1:30 minutes to do a task of 10 secs in a current dual core. Process an audio file, load a level of a game...

512MB DDR of RAM - You'll be able to run XP, browse the internet and listen to music, watch or rip dvds and do home/office stuff. The same goes to the processor.

MSI Geforce MX4000 128MB 64 bit - Watch movies. Don't even think of LAUNCHING a game. They won't run. The card is unsupported. You could get a 6600 AGP if you find one, or a weaker 6200 to play some more modern but nontheless not closer than 3 year old games. With low settings.

60GB HDD 7200RPM - Allows you to just use your computer and have some movies but lots of music, not big software and some 3 year old games.

Plextor CD-RW[/quotemsg] - WHAT??? NO DVD??? get one and give this pc to your mother or little sister.

Conclusion: It is at the same time horribly outdated, unthinkable to be compared to a modern pc, but enough for home/office use.

That's it. Peace.

It'll work for simple internet browsing, email, and office applications.
Even 5 years ago it would have been considered, AT BEST an "average" machine with nothing special about it. Standard Comp USA/Best Buy $800 business desktop type stuff. You could have done much, much better on a self build even 5 years ago. Sorry, it's really pretty un-impressive.

By todays standards, it cannot even be compared. The difference is like a drag race between a 72 Chevy Impala and a 2008 Corvette.
