I've heard that my e2200 PCU won't be able to take full advantage of the 4850. Does that sound right? Its a 2.2 Ghz dual core.

depending on how your system is configured, you can overclock that 2.2ghz to 3.0-3.2 ghz. A 4850 would pair nicely with that CPU (overclocked of course)

well its true but all u need to do is oc the cpu maybe around 3.0ghz.
And if for some reason u cant i would still upgrade ur cpu will hold it back but not alot maybe around 20%

I'm not sure that overclocking will work here. Its an HP a6400f and the motherboard looks a little crappy.

It was under 400.00 at circuit city and I figured I could just OC (which I've never done), throw a GPU in there, and maybe upgrade the CPU later. Now I'm already looking at 300.00 in graphics cards and power supplies LOL. Should have just built from scratch. Live and learn.

If I can't overclock and will loose like 20% of the 4850's potential perhaps I should go with a 3850 or 3870.

Sorry to inform you but those big companies that produce home pcs don't let you overclock so people can't go to them with their mother boards melted and asking for replacement. Save up money and build your own :)

wats ur budget maybe finding u a good cheap overclockable motherboard with that 4850.
(well i just gave a rough estimate i think getting the 4850 is still worth it.)
u can try to oc within the bios a little bit or download tools like ntune.

Around 250.00 left over I guess. I had enough to build a nice crossfire system but I went and bought a bicycle instead.

As for replaceing the motherboard I'm thinking about it but I'm a little afraid of messing things up, like I'd screw up the OS or the bios settings in some way.

I also just don't want to spend too much money on this thing. Would an upgradeable OC'able e2200 + 4850 HP system would be worth 750.00? (It was 400 factory and I assume I'll need ~350 for a new MB, 4850, and power supply). I dont know.

edit: K. I'm leaning toward the 4850 at his point

respect for buying the bicycle going green is good. =]
okay so just keep the the mobo dont worry about the e2200 its not going to slow it down alot. i was saying 20% bottleneck but probably a little less.
and 750$ isnt worth it i guess.
wat power supple do u have now? wats the wattage on it?

in my opinion just get the 4850 it will serve u fine and if a new psu is required just pick something up for like 30-50$
=]

the stock psu is 250W, which nothing runs on, so whatever else I do I have to get the 550W antec.
I'm also going to order the 4850 and see what happens. thanks a ton for your input.

I ordered the following...
PSU
www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817371016
GPU Giga 4850
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125224

I'm a little worried as the 4850 sounds so huge, loud, and hot according to reviews. oh well. If it gets too hot or doesnt fit, screw it I'll start over with a decent build and give the hp to my mom or something.

The BSEL mod sounds interesting and I'll research it. Haven't heard of it before.

Thirty to fifty dollars on a PSU generally will buy something that will choke, smoke, and croak at 60% load, possibly taking his system with it.
That Antec for $60 could be quite a find though, if it's any good.
