My wife is a student and I am building a new rig and want to give Win7 a go. I have the option to get the student version of Win7 Pro for really cheap through MS but wonder if Win7 Ultimate is a better option? What are the main differences? Win7 Ultimate has the XP mode and Win7 Pro only has the compatibility mode, is that the main difference? I am mainly going to be gaming and internet surfing, but also work at home with AutoCAD 2000i will that run in Win7 Pro or will I have issues? Is it worth the HUGE gap in price to get ultimate?

Thanks!

Both SKU's have Windows XP Mode available (XP Mode can be used in Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate). Paul Thurrott has written a great comparison of the features in each Windows 7 SKU. THat article can be found here:

Thanks, I think that pretty much made up my mind. I'll go with Pro for now as it looks like that has all the features I need. I didn't know the Pro had the XP mode, thought it was only the Ultimate version.
