I am running Windows Vista, unfortunately had to reinstall Vista when my system (Dell Inspiron laptop) crashed. I have backed up my hard drive to the WD Passport Elite external drive. I need to recover the data I stored, thought it would guide me through the process when I plugged in the USB, but no. I need to find out the process for restoring my hard drive. Thanks!

How did you back it up? Did you use the built in windows back up utility or another tool? Did you just copy and paste the data you wanted to save?

I used "WD Sync", software included on the drive when I bought it. It seemed to "map" the entire hard drive.

Try with hiren's boot and the partition recovery, or with active file recovery. This last work really good for me in 3 HDD 500GB, 120GB an 80GB.
