Tried overclocking my X3 720 by raising the FSB from 200 to 205, with the default multiplier of 14. When I booted to windows, after 5 minutes of stress testing, I got an "unerecoverable hardware error" bluescreen. I immediately reset the fsb to 200 and have had no problems since. I'm only using stock cooling, but surely such a small overclock should make little difference. When I monitored the temperature whilst running the stress test, temperatures didn't seem to be significantly higher than before (around 48 degrees under full load).
I was thinking it could be the RAM, in which case should I consider raising the multiplier instead of the FSB? Could it be that a component (either motherboard, processor or RAM) is defective and the overclock caused that defect to show?
the x3 720 is designed to be overclocked by raising the multiplier. i forgot what the software you use but it should be but it should be easily google-able (yes i said that) but you do know that the x3 doesn't come with a heatsink right

It's not supposed to do that...Check to see if your ram is stable with memtest86...Also try updating your bios...Also I would recommend using the multiplier to overclock.

Oh when I bought mine I had to. Buy my own. But when you overclock a x3 720 you are supposed to overclock with your multiplier. Did you Ty to unlock your 4th core?
Yea I tried the multiplier and have it stable at 3.0 so far. I did try to unlock the 4rd core but I was unsuccessful because there was no effect upon activating the ACC feature although I could still use the computer normally. I have an MSI 770-C45 mobo... I made another thread about this problem.
He mentions that it is best to keep the HT link under 1000 (200x5), so maybe that is the problem? He goes into more depth, but basically you can also try lowering the LDT multiplier (I wouldn't know where that is on your mobo, so...) to four and then increasing the base link speed. So then it would be 820 (205x4) for your particular oc. Good luck!
