I have a very big problem. My computer keeps randomly freezing. my specs are:
XP Home SP3 OS
AMD Athlon 64 3200+( running at 2.3 was at 2.5)
RS482-M754 motherboard
1 Gb of DDR 184-pin 2700
PCI-E ATI Radeon X800 256 VRAM
x2 80Gb HDD IDE
ok i have had this PC for a year now until about 3 weeks ago when i was playing World Of Warcraft. Then all the sudden my PC froze! this has been continuing for about a week now. It crashes when i play 3D games. I have updated my CPU and Video Drivers. I have a extra cooling fan installed and i re-applyed Thermal paste to the processor 2 months ago. I know the CPU is not overheating because the temperatures on the system are 48 degrees Celsius all the time(118.4 Fahrenheit) or lower. My First HDD has 50% free space and my second HDD has 65% free space. I have Defragged them both, scanned for viruses and disk cleaned and no change. I am using spybot search and destroy ,AVG free and Zone alarm. All of them are up to date. Please help me to fix this problem T_T
It could be one of many things. First thing I'd do is to check the video card and clean out the heatsink of dust that may have built up. This would cause it to overheat. Use memtest86+ to test your ram. Use Prime95 to test the cpu. Use ATITool to scan for artifacts to test the video card. If you still have problems, try running with everything set at stock settings. What psu are you using? It's possible it's going bad.
i found artifacts on my card but have no idea of what to do about it. My processor is the only thing overclocked. i cant seem to use memtest86+ or Prime95. like i said i have had this PC for about a year now and no problems. Ive had this video card for about month now and up until a week ago i never had this problem. Yes this did occur a short time after updating to SP3. my power supply is a austin power supply modelR-B300ATX. It says here http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon [...] index.html that they recommend a 300w and that's what i have. I checked my computer and its piratically cold and all the fans are working. I used hijackthis and i got this logfile i hope you can tell me what this means.
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512)
Boot mode: Normal
Artifacts with ATITool and crashes in games means most likely there is a problem with the video card. Did you check the heatsink for dust buildup? If it's clean, then likely the card is dieing and you need a new one.
well i used hijackthis then cleaned out my registry and now its seems to run good but i will have to play on 3D games for a while to see if the problem is actually fixed but i played WOW for about 3 hrs and secondlife for 1hr and no freezing at all!!! But like i said before ill have to monitor to see if the problem persists.
For consistant test, try 3dMark06 and let Speedfan monitor GPU temp, it may overheat under load. What temp does your CPU reach on full load? Have you tried reducing the overclock?
well i just realized that since Ive had the Catalyst Control Center for my ATI Radeon card i haven't had any freezes O_O i wonder why? Do you think there is something wrong with my CCC program?
