As many of you may already know i burnt out my 780i. On sunday i had to get a new mobo. I got a nice asus rampage extreme to put under Dry ice(DICE).
The rampage is a very nice and "cool" looking board. All the little do-dads it comes with are great to.
I also got some new ram as you can see in the pic.
Is a pretty beutiful board.
^ LOLd at that tag for a long time. And yes that is a sticker on the mobo for you to put your name.
^ ahhh there we go. All fixed up now.
Time to get ready for dice. *pulls off dice pot from shelf and wipes dust off*
Beautiful, isnt it?
^ A shot down in the pot
It showed up at my doorstep at about 3pm... By about 7 i had my whole board prepped for dice.
All prepped up and ready to go.
Wait a minute.... something is missing.....
Oh yeah!

The pot is all ready to go.
Ok finally all ready to bench...
I boot it up and everything is working fine and dandy! Time for some overclocking (=
I hop into the bios for the first time and i do some simple stuff just to see how good this is...(remember i only got the board 5 hrs ago
)
First attempt is 3.8ghz on almost stock voltages! (CPU temp always stays at 41c in windows when im sub zero. Its actually like -70c)
This is thirsty for more!
A few steps later im at 4.6Ghz still thirsty for more!
About 5 steps later im about to cross the bridge to 5ghz.
That is where it started getting tuff. Every setting in the bios mattered. I continue still.
Finally after many failed attempts i pass 5 Ghz.
I still had some dry ice left so i had to push it further.
Many many many reboots later:
Still had to push it though, its just not fast enough for me.
Finally at 2am (11hrs after i got my board) i managed to figure out the highest voltage my chip would take. So i crank it up to that and raise the NB voltage alot. (1.87v)
Things got very intense at this point.
after many more attempts i was running low on dice. So i had to work fast.
And then i passed 5.5ghz at 2:30am....

I was so happy. Next round ill get a different mobo, some ln2 and a ln2 pot for my nb. Ill see how far that takes me. I hope 5.9ghz isnt asking to much.
I had alot of fun tonight with this board. I hope i can get a better one soon so i can clock this little devil even higher.
The features like the "lcd poster" really help when overclocking this board. They will help you get that last little bit of speed out of it once you in windows.

Cant wait to see what i can get with some ln2 a better mobo and a better pot.

Awesome dude! you truly are the king of overclocking lol, you need to add that to you're sig. now if I could just get my i7 stable hmmmm..

Thanks man (=
Great to know that someone is out there this late reading my post

haha, I cant sleep BTW does that blue stuff stick to you're motherboard like playto or something? oh yea, im testing my i7 at 4 GHz *holds breath* all going well ATM load 73c max

Yeah, the blue stuff is kneadable eraser.... kinda like playdoh.
I have a layer of shoptowels unerneath the eraser just to wick up and moisture that makes it through.

You never can be to careful imo

Yeah... especially when i just got the board a couple hours before. LOL!

| Lucuis wrote : Excellent! |
Thanks...
man this has only been up for 15 min and it already has 120 views!

well it really looks like you know what you are doing! I would say that if you really want to get to 5.9 then its something that is possible for you! i just started to overclock a few weeks ago and I already have an hero =)

Thanks man... that means alot.

Wow one more OVERSHOCKED'S overclocking
cool....
But I have one major complaint
Those images are pretty big...Could you please resize it little smaller...It takes a while to load too...
Your last post of that Dry ice exp crashed my browser
Actually you shouldn't have to resize them, since they're already under a meg each. I'm inclined to blame the file hosting service, you mind trying photobucket on your next set of photos for comparison?
It's really weird, it's almost as if i'm running dial-up when viewing your pics.

That's fantastic. Nice work. Simply amazing.
I would have to agree with gkay09 and Lucuis but look at the bright side! if thats the only problem with the post we are on the right path!!! Arnt we now!
do you think it would have helped at all if you had put tiny pieces of dry ice in the motherboard water block?
lol wow, very very nice man. asus ftw. !!!! good luck
Very nice Job dude..... dont fry that mobo!!!!!!!!!
Are you gettin more dice today?
Heh, I see you got some G.Skill Sticks for that bench......
| overshocked wrote : Cant wait to see what i can get with some ln2 a better mobo and a better pot.
|
What mobo do you need for 5.9Ghz???? That Rampage doesn't cut it?
| overshocked wrote : Thanks...
|
That's just you hitting refresh alot lol
| TerminatorXT wrote : do you think it would have helped at all if you had put tiny pieces of dry ice in the motherboard water block? |
Yes i do. At the later parts of it i was putting DICE on the voltage regs because they were geting pretty hot even with the massive sinks on them.
Im getting a LN2/DICE pot for my NB so that should also help me get better results.

| OvrClkr wrote : Very nice Job dude..... dont fry that mobo!!!!!!!!!
|
Im not getting more dice because i think i was pretty close to my limit with dice.
I need to get some ln2. And the ln2 pot for my NB.

| OvrClkr wrote : What mobo do you need for 5.9Ghz???? That Rampage doesn't cut it? |
The biostar tpower rocks under ln2!

So basically you are saying this board is better than the Rampage on Ln2???
^ Yeah LOL. hard to believe that that mobo kicks so much ass huh?

WoW.... that is kinda embarassing for ASUS......
Not taking anything away from Biostar but the Rampage is supposed to be a "Tier 1" mobo.........
Anyways when do we get to see the T-Power push 6Ghz?
HOw freakin cool!!!!!! RECORD?!!!! BIOSTAR?!! hmmm!
| OvrClkr wrote : WoW.... that is kinda embarassing for ASUS......
|
I hope that will happen real soon. Just gotta get one of the mobo's and a 160l tanks of liquid nitrogen then were in buisness (=

| xtc28 wrote : HOw freakin cool!!!!!! RECORD?!!!! BIOSTAR?!! hmmm! |
That would be kick ass. Not sure about a record but i could prolly come close.
I just dont like how this chip/board combo wouldnt go past 1.87v.... Maybe the biostar one will.

Wow man, congratulations, good stuff, really good stuff. I can't wait to see what you do with ln2.
I have to also comment.... just by looks i wouldn't think the biostar could keep up with that Asus mobo but oh well =P
That asus mobo has got to be one of the prettiest computer components i have ever seen.
now thats the truth!!!!
Yeah it really is a nice board.
The biostar one should be able to take it down though. Looks can be decieving (=

I have to ask... did you fry your 780i by trying to push it a bit harder, or did it more or less just wear out from it's everyday OC?
ok so inform us as to why will take the rampage down
| Kithzaru wrote : I have to ask... did you fry your 780i by trying to push it a bit harder, or did it more or less just wear out from it's everyday OC? |
LOL, funny you should ask, i was getting ready for a dice run and when i was all ready i turned it on and nothing happend. i Looked at the error scrreen and it told me the memory was in the wrong slot.
So i look and the memory is indeed in the wrong slot. So i switch it and then boot again. Nothing. I unplug it and boot again.... nothing.... So i unplug everything re-seat the cpu memory etc. and still nuthin.
At that point i pronounced it dead.

| xtc28 wrote : ok so inform us as to why will take the rampage down |
well for one i hope it lets me get over 1.875v
And i think its in windows program is pretty badass.
Supposedly its able to get record fsb rates as well. Like 700+

aww thats a shame lol that board took you through some good runs!
| Kithzaru wrote : aww thats a shame lol that board took you through some good runs! |
Yeah man....everything ive done to that board and switching the ram is what killed it....*sigh*

I can tell you're really heart broken when i look at the "E8500@5.41" on your sig =P
I don't know how you guys do it... i couldn't even get my Athlon over a 10% OC..
@overshocked: When doing things like this kill ALL processes that aren't needed. ie. explorer.exe,etc. It helps with stability a bit. Also try booting in Safe Mode.

overshocked, You....are...my...hero!!!!!!
That was absolutely AMAZING!!! Thumbs up, clap clap!
What is the record overclock on that CPU? I think you can break it!!!
What am I comparing? I only reached 4Ghz on that unlocked phenom....
You need to come over here and help me get that 550 overclock higher...lol
Now I need to try something like dice or ln2....lol
| Shadow703793 wrote : Sweet! Is that pot by Kingpin or someone else? |
Na man... i couldnt afford one of vinces pots ATM.
I bought this one from bartx for $170. I did however buy a NB pot from vince. It was really cheap! only $50

| Shadow703793 wrote : @overshocked: When doing things like this kill ALL processes that aren't needed. ie. explorer.exe,etc. It helps with stability a bit. Also try booting in Safe Mode. |
Duh! I didnt even think of closing explorer this time!
Safe mode is for my next round of dice or with ln2.

| videl wrote : overshocked, You....are...my...hero!!!!!! |
Not sure if i can break the reccord but i hope for the top ten maybe.
The top ten starts at 6.166

^Same here, Good Luck!!!
Getting it that high i would imagine it partly depends on the CPU itself, since some CPU's of the same series/brand/speed can OC better or worse than others in the same batch.
