4870 Vs gtx 260

am thinking of upgrading my 8800 gt , and i wanna know which card would perform better ! am running games at 1280X1024 res. , with AA , what card do u recommend ? i have a 6000 X2 , and 3 gig of ram , and a 470 W psu , what do you think ?

12x10 8800GT is more than enough if you want go higher just slap another 8800GT, you would have faster cards in your rig than both 260 and 4870

Depending on the make and model of your PSU, you might need to upgrade that as well if you buy either a 4870 or a GTX 260. They are both power hungry cards. I would recommend the 4870, as it seems to do better in many, but not all, games and gets along with the AMD hardware a little better. I have a 8800 GTS in an AMD computer and it doesn't preform as well as I expected.

As concrum said, getting another 8800 GT and doing the SLI route would probably be better, and most certainly cheaper, than getting a GTX 260. Of course, that's assuming that you can go SLI on your motherboard.

The 4870, GTX260, and 9800GX2 are all the same level card.
Don't anguish over differences in performance.

The 4870 is shorter, if you might have trouble with the others, which are 10.5" long.
The Nvidia cards might be easier to install because the drivers will not need to be cleaned off first.

If your PSU is a quality unit with 2 pci-e connectors, then any of the cards should be ok.

but keep in mind that gtx280 will let its heat out inside the casing. 4870 outside. 4870 also has lower PSu requirement and will not have scaling problems. GX2 currently don have scaling problems either but remember what happened to 7900GX2 users when nvidia sudenly decide 2 update driver. this might happen agan considering GX2 is not in the spotlit and they want gtx2x0 to shine brighter then all the rest and giv more attention to gtx drivers.

.....if a dual 4870 gives realyy good performance, y wont a single 4870 do the same......this is how it works: u optimiz driver for single gpu....then u go 2 next gpu. and not the other way round.......

plus u 4870 is the only card in that performance range so ati wont jus 4get bout it. whereas GX2 has 2 compete with gtx260 and nvidia would definately wat gtx260 to look better

at low resolution sli usually don have good scaling cod devoloper think at low resolution, single card will be enof

I would go with the gtx 260 55 nm, releases jan. 8th, really nice card. If you really do your homework the GX2 really falls off in some gaming scenarios especially in really high res. No good for future gaming!!
