8800GT poor overclock?

Ok, I have an XFX Geforce 8800GT 512MB (600/900). I also have the latest drivers (ForceWare 177.83).

I've been trying to overclock my card using rivatuner to change clocks and monitor temps, ATItool to check for artifacts and 3DMark06 for stress testing (5x Loop).

My maximum overclock without artifacts, freezing, etc. is only 660/960 +/- 5MHz!

My temps NEVER go above 62c so I doubt its a heat issue.

Here is my rig:

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Rev. 2
CPU: Intel C2D E6750 @ 3.2GHz (AC Freezer 7 Pro)
RAM: G.Skill DDR2-800 PC6400
GPU: XFX Geforce 8800GT 512MB (Not factory OC'ed)
PSU: Xclio Stablepower 500w (cause???)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 16MB cache
DVD: Asus DVD+/-RW Drive

I know my PSU isn't great but I've had NO power related issues except maybe this...
Maybe I got a card that just won't OC?

Help!

One thing you have to understand is that not all chips are created equally. It's not automatic that if someone got his card oc'ed to let's say 725mhz that yours will get to that speed also.

I had an evga 8800gt and a friend of mine had a leadtek 8800gt. He could do 745mhz with his but mine would only do 670mhz.

So it might be the card then? I'm not upset at the lack of overclock because I did not by the card thinking I'd need to (my last card was a 9800pro).

If it's a limitation of the card, I'll gladly accept it (35-40fps in crysis!) I'm just making sure the problem is not any other one of my components (especially the PSU)

Don't worry so much about OC'ing the 8800GT, OC'ing mine gave me a MAX of 6 fps in most games, 3 in others. I went from stock to 675/1675/950 and like I said, I barely get 6 fps in the games I play. To me OC'ing GPU's is a poor way to increase performance and a quick way to deteriorating your GPU. I put mine back at stock settings, works fine stays way under 60 load, would rather it last a year than OC and get 6 fps.

Right now I have Rivatuner automatically overclock to 660/1675/960 when ANY 3D app is launched and underclock to 300/750/450 when not running a 3D app. I think this may be a good compromise... I mean, it is overclocked while gaming, but it's underclocked when not, so it may average out to be overall GOOD for the card...

Or I could be spewing BS. What do you guys think?

Bottom line is that the 8800GT is a bad OCer. Thats not to say it wont OC well in some cases but rather that it requires expensive aftermarket cooling and offers little gain.

Try lowering your memory to 950mhz
XFX highest stock o'c card was 670/975
Evga had a 700/1000

Bottom line is your experience will vary by card.
