Hello everyone!
I'm in the process of buying a new laptop. It is for school, but I'm a gamer. Most of the games i run require 2.5-3.0 ghz to run optimally. I have the opportunity to get 3 computers. One that has a 2.0ghz dual core, 2.66ghz dual core, and 3.8ghz SINGLE core. The reason i put the 2.0ghz on there is because im a bit confused to how dual core even works and 2.0ghz is cheaper so if i can get away with getting that one and it will run the games so be it... Can a 2.0ghz dual core even run a 3.0 ghz game.
Quck add-on I can also get a 3.4ghz dual core. I know this is probably the best but will the 3.8ghz single core out do it? the single core is considerably cheaper...
At this time for gaming on a laptop the video card is far more important then the processor. Also the processor model is important. 2.0 ghz core 2 duo will destroy a 2.0 ghz Turion.
Not sure how much you are looking to spend, but there is an awsome gaming laptop @ best buy for $1350, with an even better one for $150 more.

Just saw; the $1500 one is now on sale for $1250. Steal of a deal if you can afford it.
Ok so if you can't get any of those look for a laptop with a discrete video card is an 8600M GT (not GS) or higher (numerically) or 2600 or higher (numerically).
Oh and a quick comment on your games: If they require a 2.5-3.0 ghz single core processor then any modern dual core @ 1.8 ghz or higher should run them fine
The one with the best video card (of the two options above the 8700MSLI is by far the better choice). Why only three options? Can you not get a different one?
Clock speed isn't everything. A 3.8Ghz P4 (which is a pentium 570 by the way) looks completely pathetic next to a 2.133 GHz Core 2 Duo or a 2.4GHz Athlon X2. Since you're here on Tom's, take a look at this chart to compare desktop CPUs
For core clock speed, what about the video cards: Best mobile video solution: Dual 9800M GTXs in SLI. A 2 ghz core 2 duo would do fine with those video cards. Core clock speed has started to not matter as much these days becuase games are more limited by video cards then CPUs.
How much mobility do you need? If you can handle a 15 pound 17 inch behemoth mtech sells them with desktop grade processors.

So what are the actual specs on the laptops you are looking at?
Are you buying US or international?
What purpose does this machine have? Is it going to just sit on your desk plugged in or do you need to take it to class with you?
If you are going to take it to class have you ever lugged around a 17inch laptop before? They are huge.
