I had a 9800gx2. It was faulty as I lose an inch on all four sides of the OS(Vista) interface (literally it was expanded). I am using a 28" monitor at 1900x1200 resolution. My motherboard is P5k Pro, crossfire is not possbile (as recommended).

I was asked to exchange the gfx card and the supplier recommended not to use SLi for the mean while and try the 4870.

Should i get the 280gtx or the 4870 to overcome this problem? They said once I got it I have to stick with what it no exchange.

i'd go with G280, its much i mean MUCH cheaper than 4870X2, it got great value, best bang for the money ( 400$ vs 560$ for 4870X2)

thanx for the replies. The only concern is which one will fix the problem from the 9800GX2.
I lose an inch off the screen cause the OS interface is expanded off screen when I use the HD cable not the normal VGA. This only happens when the gfx card driver is installed.

Then it depend on your needs. for working with photoshop and such stuff 4870 is enough, but if you do some serious rendering requiring lots of CPU power or graphic memory, then you could probably use 2,4TFLOPS computing power 4870x2 can offer, ofcourse in case SW you are using can use it.

I am sure you already read STFU responses today, but there is it once more from me.
You evidently have either mental disorder or have no serious idea what are you talking about.
4870x2 in most cases leave G280 in dust by margin 40%+ if game have good scalability, if not and game favour nvidia performance is quite similar.
4870x2 is even able beat 2 G280 in SLI in several games.

It seems to me to be just driver issue.
anyway 4870 or 4870x2 are basicly "same cards" and should work in same way.

Only time this happend to me was when i used higher resolution then is my monitor capable off over DVI connection.

the 4870x2 you mentioned is that 2 of the 4870 or the 4870X2(already crossfired)

4870 is enof for ur monitor....but if u r lookin for better future proofing, go with x2........gtx280 is inbetween 4870 @ 4870x2.....but i don think its worth the money.

Its dual GPU single card using internal CF conection betwen chips and comming with 2GB DDR5 memory.
Good thing on this "little beast" is that it not require CF supported board and will work on any PCIe 2.0 board (not sure if it will work on PCIe 1.0 but it most probably should)

crysis is "nvidia product" givin bad performance on ati.....but still lok at this

(^look at 1900x1200.....zero scaling on 1440x900 coz noone sane would not get 4870x2 2 game on that small resolution)

Speaking about G280 vs 4870x2 in crisis from tomshardware itself and as everyone knows crysis favour nvidia.

WoW!
Your single picture review has so convinced me!
All the other benchmarks on the interwebs are now proven wrong!!
YaY nVidia!
But wait!!
You forgot to tell him how a water cooled 8800GT will beat SLI 4870's in every game!!11!!!1
O the PWNAGW!
What ever will ATI do?

Why are we looking at Crysis only? I don't see any post from the OP that he is exclusively playing Crysis.

Look at these:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/4870-x2-amd,1992-7.html

In Crysis the 4870X2 has a slight edge, in everything else it eats the GTX 280 for breakfast. There is a lot of variation in pricing of the GTX 280 as they range from $450 to $650. The 4870X2 is $550. Compared to the most inexpensive GTX 280, I still think the extra $100 gives your reasonably more performance.

Didn't you know, you can half your performance by SLI'ing the new Ati cards :). Or was he just using sarcasm there and mixed up in the sarcasm rant.

Good thing 1 source can make all others false. Keep looking until you find a benchmark that supports what you want to buy and stick with that. Extrapolate other cards to convince yourself you are buying the best.

And what games do you plan to play, if any?

Hmm...Your moniter IS widescreen correct? Also, try your moniters autoadjust to see if that fixes it. My 9800GX2 has some stretching issues on my on widescreen LCD, but a quick stretch of the screen usually fixes that issue.

4870X2 CFX = 1150$
280 SLI = 820$

who the f*** want to pay 330$$ for 4 FPS extra??
thats 82$/fps! it just doesnt justified the price. like i said 4870X2 is just way way too overpriced.

LOLLL talking about best bang for the money
