I have a brand new E8400 (5 days old) running on a Asus P5KPL-CM motherboard that has been flashed to the latest 0514 BIOS.

I just noticed today after a reboot that my CPU is running at 99C. THis seems quite high to me?

THe case has pretty good cooling, I'm not o/c and I am running the stock Intel Cooler. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Sounds like a sensor is messed up. What program are you using to read the cpu temp? I recommend coretemp.

I doubt that it would get that hot since the chip would clock down before it would burn up.
Check the sensor program you are using.

I do not think that you need to reseat your heatsink since the chip would not get that hot. It never hurts to check that the pins are pressed down tight enough.

The cpu should be slowing itself down or shutting off at that temperature.

Most likely, your cooler is not mounted properly.
Was there some plastic on the cooler that you did not remove?
Is the cooler fan spinning?
With the power off and disconnected, try to wiggle the cooler. If it is not solid, you will have to remount it.

Buy some thermal grease like as5 or mx-2. Don't try to reuse what was on the intel cooler.

Remove the motherboard from the case. It is the only way to be certain that you get it mounted properly.
Clean off the old grease with alcohol and a paper coffee filter.
Put a thin stripe of grease on and remount. Arctic silver site has photos and instructions on how to do this.
Play with the push pins until you know how they work.
Mount the cooler, pressing down on diagonal pairs of push pins.
Look at the back of the mobo to be certain that all 4 pins are all the way through.

If the heatsink wiggles even a little bit its not on good, and needs redone with new thermal paste. Reusing old paste doesn't yeild good results.

Use Realtemp/Coretemp for temps. I recommend realtemp.

Make sure its 99c and not 99f. 99f would be fine.

What did you use to get those temp readings?

Your heatsink isn't seated correctly or the proper amount of thermal paste wasn't used. You need to take off the current heat sink and clean off all the old thermal paste using Arctic Cleaner 5 or isoprophyl alcohol (greater then 70% if im not mistaken), and then reapply the thermal paste (you can use the method located here http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/ap [...] ap.pdf)and reseat your heatsink making sure that it is installed properly and that there complete contact between it and your cpu.

Yes 99C is extremelly hot, its amazing that your bios didn't shut off your pc automatically due to how hot that thing is running. Once you get this sorted out you should probably go into the bios and set the cpu shut off temperature somewhere around 80C.

Thanks guys,

It looks like my CPu has clocked down to 2006.6Mhz. I've used multiple CPU temp readers. Even the BIOS states that the CPU is to hot upon boot.

I did remove the plastic cover upon installation of the heatsink. I used the thermal paste. It took me a while but i did get the Heatsink seated properly. I've double checked the heatsink and it is fine. The CPU fan is spinning at 2200 RPM.

Could the CPU be failing?

Thanks

Something is wrong.

It is possible that the cpu is bad, but it is most unusual.

Check the case ventilation.
There should be an intake fan, and an output fan. Dangle a piece of tissue in front of each fan to check the airflow.
Take the side cover off and direct a small house fan at the innards. If temps normalize, you have a case cooling problem.

The Intel stock coolers are not great, and are a bit noisy, but they should do the job.

I am still betting on an improper heatsink mount.
Did you look at the back of the mobo to see that all pins are fully through?

Hey guys, I have eliminated the problem. I exchanged the CPU and picked up some thermal grease. Now I'm idling at 38C.
