Hi guys,

I have an Abit AN52 motherboard which is socket AM2 but it says that it supports athlon64 chips on the packaging. Does this mean it just supports socket AM2 athlon64 chips or can i put my socket 939 athlon 64 3700+ into it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

No. Am2 cpus recognize ddr2 only, while socket 939 is ddr only. It has to do with amd's onboard memory controller. And the cpus have slightly different pin placement for mounting so it's impossible to interchange the 2.

if you try you will see that the 939 pin chip will not fit onto the am2 mobo, the pin layout is different and the am2 has more..:)

All of you are wrong I have a socket 939 pin in an am2 mobo. I have an athlon 64 4000+ in an Asus M4n82 Deluxe mobo and it also works in my am2 biostar mobo so everyone of you are wrong I can even show you the cpuz pics.

Thats because the Athlon 65/4000+ was released in both socket 939 format, *and* later, also in AM2 format....
